Job description

This is not a Rails developer position.

Please note: We are only fielding applications from candidates based in the U.S. or Europe, with a strong US preference. If that's not you, please do not apply.

About the Rails Foundation

The Rails Foundation exists to improve the documentation, education, marketing, and events that support the worldwide Rails community so that more people can discover, learn, build, and succeed with Rails.

We are now seeking an organized Project Manager to help further that mission.

About the Role

A Project Manager at the Rails Foundation will work directly with the Foundation’s leadership to manage projects across all of the foundation’s “pillars”. We are looking for someone who knows how to take a project from start to completion, and who is excited to jump in and own the work.

You would build educational resources, support marketing efforts, own event work streams, and support the day-to-day operations that help Rails grow. Here are projects you could be working on across our pillars:

Education and Documentation:

  • Help design and launch new Rails learning resources (written and video tutorials, video series, guides, etc).
  • Manage a team of freelance writers and developers.
  • Oversee and participate in the review process for case studies, videos, guides, etc.

Marketing:

  • Manage a content calendar covering social, blogs, event-related news, tutorials, videos, case studies, and updated guides.
  • Draft and edit community-facing comms (blog posts, announcements, social posts, emails).
  • Manage production schedules and teams for new video series.

Events:

  • Assist in planning and executing Rails World, our annual user conference, owning several overlapping work streams through to completion.
  • Handle logistics, budgeting, vendor coordination, and communications.
  • Partner with sponsors, volunteers, and vendors to make Rails World the best event in our space.
  • Supporting other Rails events around the world.
  • Support event marketing efforts (emails, social media posts, web copy, etc).

Operations:

  • Track your projects’ progress, budgets, and deadlines.
  • Keep your project boards and folders in order. We are a fully remote team that works with a global team of freelancers and vendors, so having a strong, clear, repeatable process is crucial.

Skills and Experience

  • 4+ years of experience in project management, marketing, events, developer relations, or community building.
  • Great communication skills (written, verbal, and interpersonal) with an eye for technical audiences.
  • Experience with any of the following is a strong plus: content creation, marketing, editing & production for technical audiences.
  • Familiarity with Rails or Ruby preferred, since a lot of our work is fine-tuning content and marketing around Rails. But if you’ve done similar work in open source or another programming field, that can work too.

You’ll be great in this role if you:

  • Are self-driven and comfortable working in a remote, async environment.
  • Understand that working transparently helps everyone work together more efficiently.
  • Can take feedback with grace. Like the framework itself, the Rails community is opinionated and engaged, so you should always be up for hearing feedback without taking it personally.

Details

This is a part-time contract-to-hire role, with the goal of converting to a full-time staff position within the next year.

Compensation for the full-time role is $80,000/year (with the goal of onboarding to full time by next year). Before that, it will be a part-time freelance role, so the compensation will be adjusted accordingly.

This is a fully remote position, though some travel will be required for community events and conferences.

We are only fielding applications from candidates based in the U.S. or Europe, with a strong preference US. U.S. employees will be hired directly through the Rails Foundation (a Delaware nonprofit). International candidates will be employed via a global EOR platform.

The Rails Foundation welcomes people of all backgrounds to apply. All employment decisions are decided on the basis of qualifications, experience, merit, and business need. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, gender, or other applicable legally protected characteristics.

Note: While we respect everyone’s right to participate in political expression and activism outside of the workplace, the foundation will stay focused on our mission: improving Rails for developers everywhere. We will therefore not be weighing in on politics and causes unrelated to our direct mission. You should be comfortable with this.

If you recognize yourself in the above description, we’d love to hear from you.
