Job summary

SMC Ltd is seeking a Project Manager to oversee development from quotation support through transfer to Manufacturing. You will coordinate molds, tooling, processes and validations, and act as primary technical interface with customers.

The role requires a BS in Engineering (plastics preferred), 7+ years in plastics/injection molding, strong communication and CAD skills, and hands-on leadership. On-site in Santa Rosa, CA with robust quality and safety focus.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering, plastics preferred.
  • Seven years of experience in the plastics industry, preferably injection molding.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for sensitive situations.
  • Strong proposal writing and presentation skills.
  • Ability to exercise strong judgment in analyzing and solving problems.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software; SolidWorks preferred.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English.

Responsibilities

  • Lead small development projects and support the SMC project team on development or sustaining projects.
  • Research, design, and develop molds, tooling, processes, automation, fixtures, EOAT, etc.
  • Primary interface with customers and effective internal/ external communication.
  • Develop project timelines aligned with quoted lead-times and validation requirements.
  • Manage projects to meet customer deliverables, quality, and financial targets.
  • Use project management techniques: action items, meeting minutes, priorities.
  • Gather product requirements from customers and be primary technical interface.
  • Review product designs for compliance with engineering standards and specs.
  • Provide technical support in design, materials, mold design, manufacturing, and validations.
  • Ensure testing leads to robust processes and DOE objectives; write reports.
  • Develop Device Master Record (DMR) and ensure documentation readiness for RTM.
  • On-site attendance at our Santa Rosa, CA facility.
  • Post-RTM support and issue resolution.
  • Maintain a safe work environment following policies.
  • Coordinate with operations for product release to manufacturing.
  • Other duties as assigned.

In the position of a Project Manager, you will manage and oversee the development of new projects from quotation support, through development and validation of molds, equipment, and manufacturing processes, and successful transfer to Manufacturing.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead small development project and support SMC project team on development and/or sustaining projects.
  • Work with internal and external resources to research, design, and develop all of the necessary elements of the project – molds, tooling, processes, automation, fixtures, EOAT, secondary equipment, etc.
  • Effective use of personal and team, and organizational communication. As the primary interface good communication skills and responsiveness are required.
  • Develop project timelines that support our quoted lead‑times, and incorporate the customer requirements for validation, pilot builds, and approval.
  • Manage project to ensure that we meet the customer deliverables and complete a successful development so that we meet the quality and financial requirements of the project.
  • Deploy good project management techniques with internal and external teams – action item lists, meeting minutes, strong communication skills, setting priorities, seeking other assistance as required.
  • Be the primary technical interface with customer.
  • Gather product requirements from the customer.
  • Review product design for compliance with engineering principles, engineering standards and customer requirements and specifications.
  • Provide technical support and input in the areas of product design, material selection, mold design, manufacturing, secondary operations, validations and other areas related to our industry.
  • Ensure that mold, process, or assembly testing is performed in a manner that will give us a thorough development, and a robust manufacturing process.
  • Lead efforts to determine test and DOE objectives. Resolve issues that are found during testing. Write and review reports as related to the project including validation reports and summaries as needed.
  • Develop and gather all the necessary documentation during the project set‑up and development phases. Develop the Device Master Record (DMR), and ensure that internal documentation and systems are up to date at the time of the Release to Manufacturing (RTM).
  • Regular attendance on site at our Santa Rosa, CA facility.
  • Provide internal support for the project after RTM, and resolve any new issues that develop.
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe work environment by following all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Work with the operations team to ensure seamless release of products to manufacturing.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering preferably Plastics.
  • A minimum of seven years of experience, preferred, in the Plastics Industry, preferably Injection Molding.
  • Capable of multi‑tasking, organized, excellent time management skills.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
  • Strong technical and proposal writing skills.
  • Must have strong presentation skills.
  • Ability to exercise strong judgment in analyzing, evaluating and solving problems.
  • Working knowledge of 3D CAD software. Solidworks is preferred.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English.
ADA Requirements
  • Stand, walk, bend, squat, twist, reach or otherwise move frequently.
  • Occasional repetitive motion and grasping.
  • Occasional climbing to reach areas on machines or racks.
  • Lift, move or otherwise transfer up to 50 lbs. occasionally, >20 lbs. frequently.
  • Typically sits, grasps items or performs keyboarding for occasional operation of a computer.
  • Exposure to typical machine shop physical hazards which may require respiratory protection.

Annual Salary Range $86,000 - $135,000
