Job summary

SMC Ltd. is seeking a project-focused engineer to drive development of molds, tooling, processes, and automation from quotation support through validation and transfer to manufacturing.

You will collaborate across teams to ensure timelines meet quoted lead-times, maintain quality and financial targets, and provide technical resource support throughout the project lifecycle. Prior molding and CAD experience is essential, with lean and medical device exposure a plus.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Plastics Engineering or a similar degree with 2 years of related experience.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Experience implementing decoupled molding processes and scientific molding techniques.
  • Technical skills in manufacturing processes and methods, including workflow, layout, assembly, and production equipment.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple projects.
  • Team player with excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong knowledge of 3D CAD software.
  • SolidWorks experience.
  • Previous leadership experience.
  • Experience within the medical device industry.
  • Experience with lean manufacturing concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Research, design, and develop project molds, tooling, processes, automation, fixtures, EOAT, and secondary equipment with internal/external resources.
  • Develop project timelines that support quoted lead-times and align with customer validation requirements.
  • Manage projects to meet quality and financial objectives for customers.
  • Apply project management techniques; act as a technical resource to customers.
  • Review product designs for compliance with engineering principles and customer specs.
  • Provide input on product design, materials, mold design, manufacturing, and validations.
  • Ensure mold/process/testing supports robust manufacturing processes.
  • Define DOE objectives and resolve issues.
  • Prepare validation reports and DMRS; ensure documentation is up-to-date at RTM.
  • Support project post-RTM and resolve issues as needed.
  • Maintain safe work environment per policies.

Job Summary

Participate in the development of new projects with the SMC project team from quotation support, through development and validation of molds, equipment, and manufacturing processes, and successful transfer to manufacturing.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work with internal/external resources to research, design, and develop project molds, tooling, processes, automation, fixtures, End of Arm Tool (EOAT), and secondary equipment.
  • Develop project timelines that support quoted lead‑times and incorporate customer requirements for validation, pilot builds, and approval.
  • Manage projects to ensure customer deliverables meet quality and financial objectives.
  • Deploy good project management techniques with internal and external teams; act as a technical resource to the customer.
  • Review product design for compliance with engineering principles/standards and ensure adherence to customer specifications.
  • Provide technical support and input in product design, material selection, mold design, manufacturing, secondary operations, validations, and other related areas.
  • Ensure mold, process, or assembly testing is performed appropriately to provide a thorough development and a robust manufacturing process.
  • Determine testing and Design of Experiments (DOE) objectives and resolve any issues found.
  • Write/review validation reports and summaries related to the project; develop the Device Master Record (DMR) and keep internal documentation current at the time of Release to Manufacturing (RTM).
  • Provide internal support for the project after RTM and solve problems as needed.
  • Ensure a safe work environment by following all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Perform all other duties assigned.

  • Technical skills in manufacturing processes and methods, including workflow, layout, assembly, and production equipment.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple projects.

  • Strong knowledge of 3D CAD software.
Desirable Qualifications
  • SolidWorks experience.
  • Previous leadership experience.
  • Experience within the medical device industry.

ADA Requirements
  • Typically sits, grasps items, and performs keyboarding for frequent computer operation.
  • Stand, walk, bend, reach, or otherwise move about occasionally.
  • Lift, move, or otherwise transfer items up to 30 lbs. occasionally.
  • Occasional exposure to typical machine shop physical hazards.
  • Travel by air or car occasionally.
