Job summary

Smart & Final is seeking an experienced Project Manager - Construction for its Store Support Center in Commerce, CA. The role oversees new construction and remodel projects, ensuring adherence to plans, schedules, and budgets while aligning with corporate policies and strategic plans.

Responsibilities include on-site inspections, contractor coordination, cost estimation, permits coordination, and close-out documentation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college; 5–10 years of related commercial/retail construction administration experience is required.
  • Construction project management certification or similar certifications are desirable.

  • Coordinate with architect and Store Design to ensure building plans meet local requirements prior to permits and bidding.
  • Review construction estimates for conformance to approved budgets and maintain project budget summaries.
  • Coordinate between General Contractor, suppliers, and internal Smart & Final departments to ensure timely delivery and installation of components.
  • Manage punch-list items and warranty walkthroughs with contractors and vendors; document close-out records.
  • Provide weekly status reporting to senior construction leadership.

Job description

We are searching for an experienced Project Manager - Construction for our Store Support Center located at 600 Citadel Drive, Commerce, CA, 90040.

SUMMARY

Manages the new construction and remodel projects to ensure an orderly completion of projects in accordance with all existing corporate and departmental policies and procedures, as well as strategic development plans.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Performs other duties as assigned or required.
  • Responsible for initial and on-going physical inspection of the job sites as well as meetings with contractors as necessary to insure adherence to plans, specifications, schedule, and budget. Quality of the final construction and timely completion is a MAJOR responsibility of the Construction Project Manager. Has complete authority to control quality of construction as per good construction techniques in adherence to plans and specifications.
  • Participates in developing preliminary estimated costs for new sites being considered for development, including all expected costs for building on-site and off-site improvements.
  • Coordinates with the architect and Store Design to ensure that the building plans are correct and modified to meet local requirements prior to submission for building permit or distribution to general contractors for bidding a specific job.
  • Reviews and analyzes construction estimates for conformance to approved organizational budgets.
  • Ensures orderly administration of project related paperwork.
  • Reviews all construction invoices, guarantees their accuracy, and maintains on-going Project Budget Summary showing costs to date versus approved budget.
  • Coordinates between the General Contractor and all construction suppliers to ensure timely delivery and installation of critical components to the job site (i.e. fixtures/equipment, refrigeration, HVAC, signage, etc.).
  • Coordinates between the General Contractor and all internal Smart & Final departments (Operations, Merchandising, IS, etc.) to ensure timely installation of systems and turnover for stocking and grand opening.
  • Responsible for punch-list and one-year warranty walk through with General Contractor, vendors, and all S&F departments to list any items that remain to be completed. Responsible for completion of all punch-list items.
  • Responsible for weekly status reporting (or more frequently as needed) of projects to SVP of Construction, Director of Construction, and Manager of Field Operations.
  • At the conclusion of each project, coordinates that the close-out book, as-built plans, and site plans are received and filed. Ensures that all pertinent project notes and documents are assembled in the permanent project file.
  • Executes Work Orders and reviews the corresponding Change Orders from the General Contractors.
  • Coordinates activities with Construction Coordinator in administrative functions as necessary.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) from an accredited four-year college or university (or equivalent combination of education and experience); and five to ten years related commercial/retail construction administration experience is required.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Construction Project Management Certification or similar certifications are desirable.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Must by PC proficient and be available for overnight travel to construction sites.

COMPENSATION:

The salary range for this position is $90,000.00 to $110,000.00. The actual starting pay will be determined by a number of qualifications; including, experience and relevant skills.
