Job summary

UNC Health Care is seeking a construction project manager to plan, coordinate, evaluate, and direct all construction and renovation projects across our campus network. The role focuses on delivering projects on time, within budget, and in compliance with health care codes and safety standards.

Applicants should have at least five years in construction engineering or project management, and a bachelor's degree in engineering or construction management is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years' experience in construction engineering or construction project management.
  • Experience with NFPA 101 (LSC), AIA guidelines for healthcare construction, and International Building Codes.
  • Bachelor's degree strongly preferred; Formal Degree in Engineering or Construction Management preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with developing construction and renovation project scopes and budgets.
  • Negotiate and secure cost estimates with consultants and architects.
  • Represent the Hospital in meetings to ensure objectives and standards are met.
  • Coordinate project planning steps with all parties involved.
  • Manage renovation and construction projects for coordinated phasing and scheduling.
  • Address infection control (ICRA), interim life safety measures, noise, vibration, and privacy in planning and implementation.
  • Plan to minimize disruption to patients, staff and physicians while balancing costs.
  • Ensure compliance with building, electrical, fire codes and regulatory standards.
  • Keep leaders informed of status, responsibilities, and schedules.

Summary

Plans, coordinates, evaluates, manages, and directs all construction and renovation projects.

Responsibilities
  • 7.1 Assists with developing construction and renovation project scopes and budgets for review by others.
  • 7.2 Negotiates and secures cost estimates for projects utilizing consultants, architects, hospital department resources, and others appropriate for the project.
  • 7.3 Represents the Hospital during construction and renovation projects to ensure the Hospital's best interests are protected by attending routine planning and construction meetings, clarifying hospital objectives and standards, and resolving conflicts.
  • 7.4 Communicates and coordinates project planning steps effectively with all appropriate parties involved.
  • 7.5 Manages renovation and construction projects to ensure coordinated phasing and scheduling are effectively achieved among all parties.
  • 7.6 Organizes projects to ensure infection control (ICRA), interim life safety measures, noise, vibration, and privacy considerations are addressed in both the planning process and during project implementation.
  • 7.7 Plans projects to minimize the disruptive effects on patients, family, hospital staff and physicians while balancing operational efficiency and cost concerns.
  • 7.8 Ensures projects comply with building codes, electrical codes, fire codes safety concerns, and accreditations and regulatory standards.
  • 7.9 Ensures that department and hospital leaders affected by projects are appropriately apprised of project status, responsibilities, and schedules during the project's renovation and construction phases.
  • 7.10 Leads effective and collaborative team meetings during construction projects.
  • 7.11 Coordinates activities, plans, and decisions with designers and general contractors to facilitate timely completion of projects.
  • 7.12 Manages project costs to meet project budget.
  • 7.13 Reviews and recommends (to appropriate hospital management) requested construction change directives and change orders.
Education and Formal Training

4.1.1 Bachelor's degree strongly preferred. Formal Degree, and Training in Engineering or Construction Management preferred.

Work Experience

4.2.1 Minimum 5 years' experience in construction engineering or construction project management. Specific experience in health care construction and renovation project management preferred.

4.2.2 Working knowledge and experience with NFPA 101 (LSC), AIA minimum guidelines for healthcare construction, and the International Building Codes.
