Job summary

AEP seeks an experienced Project Manager to lead large, complex programs in a matrix environment. You will guide initiation through closure, supervise outages, and apply both Waterfall and Agile methods to ensure on-time delivery and safety compliance.

Candidates should have a PMP, strong stakeholder communication, risk management, and construction safety expertise, with experience in utilities or IT systems and willingness to travel as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, PM, CS, or related field with 7–10 years qualified experience.
  • Associate’s degree in the same disciplines with 9–12 years qualified experience.
  • High School Diploma/GED with 11–14 years qualified experience.

Job description

  • Manage multiple highly complex projects or programs within a matrix team environment
  • Lead, direct, train, coordinate, and communicate throughout project initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, control, and closure
  • Plan, organize, direct, coordinate, and supervise customer project and outage activities
  • Apply Waterfall and Agile project management principles and techniques
  • Enforce AEP safety policies and standards and support the "Zero Harm" commitment
  • Supervise and coordinate project/outage plans, schedules, budgets, tools, and staff
  • Manage costs and reallocate funding; communicate project and outage status
  • Lead planning meetings, project updates, and complex stakeholder presentations
  • Produce written reports and manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders, contractors, vendors, suppliers, and customers
  • Monitor customer satisfaction and foster teamwork
  • Provide guidance, instruction, and training on designs, systems, procedures, processes, schedules, and costs
  • Supervise direct reports, support their development, and mentor project and assistant project managers
  • Represent AEP with industrial customers, vendors, and regulators as required
  • Develop and manage procurement plans and outside-service contracts, including proposals, bid evaluation, vendor selection, negotiations, performance oversight, and quality assurance
  • Manage project closeout and assess project success and realized benefits
  • Align projects with AEP project management standards and governance requirements
  • Manage assigned programs
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, Project Management, Computer Science, or related field with seven (10) years qualified experience; OR Associate’s degree in the same required disciplines with nine (12) years qualified experience; OR High School Diploma/GED with eleven (14) years qualified experience
  • PMP certification required unless approval to waive the requirement is given by the organization's SVP or OPCO President
  • Qualified experience in project management, major construction field experience, project estimating, project controls, project engineering, and/or comparable internal or external experience in a competitive production environment
  • Demonstrated successful project management duties, business acumen, and prior responsibility for all certifying body knowledge areas
  • Demonstrated specialist-level PM knowledge in construction safety, negotiations, scope development and control, cost estimating, construction contracting, project controls and reporting, quality control, and risk management
  • Experience in utilities, commercial nuclear power, and/or IT systems favorable
  • Valid state driver’s license
  • Effective leadership, team building, meeting management, communication, listening, economic analysis, risk assessment, prioritization, conflict management, scope management, technical solution evaluation, contract development and management, and project risk management skills
  • Ability to perform light physical duties, including construction site walkdowns on unstable surfaces and climbing ladders
  • Ability to work at AEP locations including homes, offices, power plants, nuclear sites, and construction sites
  • Ability to work in hazardous areas and possible radiation exposure at nuclear power sites within NRC-prescribed limits
  • Ability to travel, typically 25% or less
