Job summary

Pace Contracting is seeking a Project Estimator to manage the full bid lifecycle for site, utility, and heavy highway projects. You will analyze plans, perform quantity takeoffs, and coordinate with vendors, subcontractors, and project teams to deliver accurate, well-organized estimates.

The role requires 5+ years in construction estimating, a related bachelor's degree, and proficiency with HCSS, Oman, and Agtek. Expect collaboration with owners and accounting, and a fast-paced bid environment.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience bidding for private site or highway construction projects.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management or related field.
• Experience managing full bid processes from cradle to grave on complex projects.
• Working knowledge of construction assemblies and all project phases.
• Ability to identify value-engineering options and constructability issues.

Responsibilities

• Work the full life cycle of a bid from invitation to submission.
• Analyze plans, addenda, and specifications for accuracy.
• Identify scope of work and perform quantity takeoffs for civil and utilities.
• Visit sites, attend pre-bid meetings to learn scope and site conditions.
• Solicit and review proposals from vendors and subcontractors; assess responses and compliance.
• Ensure estimates are complete, organized, and review-ready for management.
• Develop preliminary construction schedules based on plans and specs.
• Manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and maintain organized workflows.
• Collaborate with owners, vendors, subcontractors, PMs, and accounting.
• Work hands-on as part of Estimating/PM team.

Job description

Purpose

The Project Estimator is responsible for the preparation of estimates associated with any combination of the following construction areas:

• Utilities and asphalt paving for site improvements, commercial buildings, apartment and subdivision projects.
• Wastewater and water treatment centers.
• Cityscape improvement projects.
• Heavy Highway or civil construction projects, including DOT projects.
• Grade and drain.

Job Responsibilities

• Work the entire life cycle of a bid from bid invitation to finalizing bid proposal for submission to owner.
• Analyze and review construction documents: plans, addendums, and specifications.
• Identify scope of work and perform quantity takeoffs of site, civil, and underground utility work.
• Conduct project site visits and attend pre-bid site meetings during bidding process to learn scope of work and understand site conditions/restrictions.
• Solicit and review proposals from material vendors and subcontractors to ensure accuracy, evaluate responses, scope compliance, and make recommendations with regards to the overall project estimate and bid package.
• Ensure estimates are complete, well organized, and ready for review by management.
• Develop preliminary construction schedules based on the project information provided in the plans and specifications.
• Manage multiple projects simultaneously, maintain a highly organized work area, meet critical deadlines, prioritize daily activities, and multitask.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills with a strong attention to detail as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
• This position will work closely with project owners, vendors, subcontractors, project managers, and accounting.
• Works hands on and independently, as well as part of the estimating/project management team.

Education and Experience

• 5+ years of experience working for either a Site Contractor bidding on private projects, or a Highway Contractor as an estimator bidding on DOT/heavy highway projects required. Estimating projects which typically range from $100k to $50m.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management or related fields.
• Must have experience effectively managing the entire bid process from cradle to grave, including mass excavation, concrete structures, highway, bridges, pump stations, drainage systems and underground utilities.
• Working knowledge of construction assemblies and all project phases.
• Experience in identify value-engineering alternatives.
• Ability to identify constructability issues through the estimating process.
• Ability to assess site exposures/construction risks and appropriately analyze cost and reflect these in an estimate.
• Ability to produce accurate estimates from conceptual and schematic drawings.
• Ability to produce detailed, final contract estimates.
• Ability to read, write and communicate effectively.
• Must be computer literate with a working knowledge of HCSS, Oman and/or Agtek.
