Job summary

Dick Anderson Construction is seeking a Project Estimator to prepare detailed cost estimates for commercial construction projects. This role reviews plans and specifications, performs quantity takeoffs, coordinates subcontractor pricing, and works closely with Project Managers throughout the bidding process.

Occasional travel to project sites is required. On-site responsibilities include maintaining bid lists, collecting estimate data, and ensuring safety costs are included in bids while meeting

Responsibilities

  • Maintain bid lists and estimating logs for current and future projects.
  • Collect information for estimates by reviewing site conditions with Project Manager and calculating quantities.
  • Study plans and specs, obtain subcontractor quotes, and manage bidders lists.
  • Include project safety costs (e.g., trench boxes, safety meetings) in bids.

Job description

Job Summary

The Project Estimator is responsible for preparing detailed cost estimates for commercial construction projects. This position reviews plans and specifications, performs quantity takeoffs, coordinates subcontractor pricing, and works closely with Project Managers throughout the bidding process. Occasional travel to project sites is required.

Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field preferred (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum of 5 years of estimating experience in heavy civil or commercial construction.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Experience performing quantity takeoffs and developing accurate cost estimates.
  • Knowledge of construction means, methods, materials, and production rates.
  • Experience soliciting and evaluating subcontractor and supplier bids.
  • Proficiency with estimating software, Microsoft Office, and other construction-related applications.
  • Strong analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and time management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple bids and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid driver’s license with the ability to travel to project sites as needed.
Essential Job Functions
  • Maintains current and future project bid lists: Maintains estimating log of current bidding projects and future/potential projects. Assists in looking at WEB pages, newspapers, and other publications for future/potential projects. Obtains plans from owner/engineering firms.
  • Collects information for the estimate: Reviews site with Project Manager to note potential risks. Assists in calculating job quantities.
  • Studies and understands plans and specifications, including estimating assumptions, production rates, and methods of construction. Assists in requesting subcontractor quotes. Obtains bidders list.
  • Makes safety a key factor in bidding by including costs of trench boxes, confined space detection, safety meetings, etc., and other project safety needs.

  • May perform other duties as needed.
Physical Demand Qualifications

The job of Project Estimator is a Light Duty job, according to the Selected Characteristics of Occupations Defined in the Revised Dictionary of Occupational Titles, U.S. Department of Labor and Industry. Light Duty involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects.
