Job summary

Smith Group of Americas Construction seeks a Project Engineer 2 to assist the Project Manager in the successful execution of warehouse construction projects in Dallas, TX. You will coordinate project activities, manage documentation, and support field and office operations to ensure timely delivery.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a related field.
  • 2–5 years of construction project engineering experience preferred.
  • Understanding of submittals, RFIs, change management, and project documentation processes.
  • Knowledge of construction drawings, specs, and contract documents.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Project Manager with day-to-day project operations for warehouse construction projects.
  • Set up initial project documentation, contracts, and project information systems.
  • Coordinate activities across multiple trades to support construction sequencing.
  • Support resolution of design coordination issues with project teams and design partners.
  • Receive, review, distribute, and track submittals for timely approvals.
  • Manage RFI process to ensure timely responses and documentation.
  • Assist in managing permitting processes and compliance with local requirements.
  • Support bid package preparation and procurement activities.
  • Identify long-lead materials and set procurement priorities to avoid delays.
  • Update schedules based on team inputs and material delivery timelines.
  • Support change management including tracking and pricing requests.
  • Track and inspect material deliveries for quality and alignment with specs.
  • Assist with project cost tracking and client/status reporting.
  • Attend or facilitate project meetings and document minutes.
  • Support project closeout activities and turnover packages.
  • Promote Smith Group of Americas Construction EH&S policies.

Job description

The Project Engineer 2 supports the Project Manager in the successful execution of warehouse construction projects for Smith Group of Americas Construction. This role works under direct supervision and is responsible for coordinating project activities, managing documentation, and supporting field and office operations. The ideal candidate is a flexible, detail-oriented team player with strong communication and client service skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the Project Manager with day-to-day project operations on warehouse construction projects.
  • Set up initial project documentation, contracts, and project information systems.
  • Coordinate activities across multiple trades to support efficient construction sequencing.
  • Support resolution of design coordination issues in collaboration with project teams and design partners.
  • Receive, review, distribute, and track submittals to ensure timely approvals.
  • Manage and track the Request for Information (RFI) process to ensure timely responses and documentation.
  • Assist in managing the project permitting process and ensure compliance with local jurisdiction requirements.
  • Support preparation of bid packages and assist with procurement activities.
  • Identify long-lead materials and establish procurement priorities to avoid schedule delays.
  • Update construction schedules based on input from the project team, trade partners, and material delivery timelines.
  • Support change management processes, including tracking, reviewing, and preparing change orders and pricing requests.
  • Track and inspect material deliveries to ensure quality and alignment with project specifications.
  • Assist with project cost tracking and support reporting on financial performance.
  • Contribute to the preparation of monthly project status reports for clients and leadership.
  • Attend and/or facilitate project meetings as directed; ensure accurate documentation and distribution of meeting minutes.
  • Support project closeout activities, including documentation, punch lists, and turnover packages.
  • Promote and enforce Smith Group of Americas Construction’s Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) policies.
  • Demonstrate commitment to a zero-incident safety culture through personal actions and team engagement.
  • Assist in reviewing subcontractor payment applications and supporting cost control processes.
  • Coordinate punch list completion and verify corrective actions.
  • Participate in quality control inspections and maintain quality management logs and documentation.
  • Support the integration and use of project technologies, including quality tracking, closeout systems, photo documentation, and procurement tools.
  • Conduct all activities in alignment with Smith Group of Americas Construction’s core values and standards of excellence.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 2-5 years of experience in construction project engineering or related role (warehouse, industrial, or large-scale commercial projects preferred)
  • Basic understanding of construction processes, sequencing, and project delivery methods
  • Familiarity with submittals, RFIs, change management, and project documentation processes
  • Working knowledge of construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with ability to work collaboratively across teams
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and construction management software (e.g., Procore, Autodesk, or similar platforms)
  • Ability to analyze data, track project progress, and support problem-solving efforts
  • Understanding of Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) practices in construction environments
  • OSHA 10-hour certification preferred (or willingness to obtain)
  • Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to quality and accuracy
  • Ability to travel to project sites as required; reliable transportation required
