Job summary

InterAgency Inc. is seeking a Project Engineer to support design and analysis of water and wastewater conveyance in the DC metro region.

You will assist senior engineers with hydraulic capacity evaluations, alternatives analyses, and pump/lift station design, contributing to plans, specs, and technical memoranda in AutoCAD/Civil 3D, GIS, and MS Office. The role requires a Civil or Environmental Engineering degree, 5+ years of related experience, and a PE license or EIT with PE progress.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required in civil or environmental engineering.
  • 5+ years of progressive engineering experience focusing on water and wastewater conveyance.
  • PE license or EIT with PE scheduled/completed; DC/MD/VA licensure preferred.
  • Experience supporting water/wastewater capital programs.
  • Ability to carry design and analysis tasks to completion with limited direction.
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic principles and hydraulic modeling.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD/Civil 3D and GIS.
  • Strong technical writing for memoranda, calculations, and reports.
  • Willingness to perform field work at facilities and construction sites.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel region-wide.

Responsibilities

  • Perform design and analysis tasks for water and wastewater conveyance assignments.

  • Prepare plans, details, specs, and memoranda in AutoCAD/Civil 3D, GIS, and MS Office.
  • Support condition assessment, inflow/infiltration, and capacity analysis.
  • Support construction-phase services including submittals, RFIs, and field observations.
  • Conduct field work: site reconnaissance, manhole/structure inspection, flow monitoring.
  • Coordinate with engineering partners, client staff, and InterAgency colleagues.
  • Contribute technical content to SOQs, proposals, scopes of work, and fee estimates.
  • Review junior staff work as the practice grows.

Project Engineer – Water & Wastewater Conveyance

Location: Hybrid – DC-MD-VA region

Over our 15-year history we have provided facility design, regulatory coordination, NEPA and Clean Water Act permitting, and program management support on multibillion-dollar deep tunnel programs, biosolids facility upgrades, coastal resilience projects, and drinking water access initiatives.

Position Overview:

InterAgency Inc. is seeking a Project Engineer to perform design and analysis tasks on our water and wastewater conveyance work. We are looking for highly motivated, process-driven, and detail-oriented professionals to support our senior engineers in design, analysis, and project management tasks. Our current projects center on water and wastewater conveyance in the Mid-Atlantic region, with our current client base including DC Water, WSSC, Fairfax, Loudoun, Arlington and AlexRenew.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform design and analysis tasks for water and wastewater conveyance assignments, including hydraulic capacity evaluation, alternatives analysis, rehabilitation versus replacement strategy, pipeline and force main design, pump and lift station design, diversion and flow control structures, and trenchless and tunnel engineering support. Tasks may include, but are not limited to:
  • Building and running hydraulic models and preparing engineering calculations, including capacity evaluations, alternatives analyses, and hydraulic profiles, and document assumptions and results clearly enough for independent review.
  • Producing plans, details, specifications, and technical memoranda in AutoCAD/Civil 3D, GIS, and Microsoft Office, and incorporating review comments from senior staff, clients, and reviewing agencies.
  • Supporting condition assessment, inflow and infiltration, and capacity assurance work, including data compilation, field data reduction, and GIS analysis.
  • Supporting construction-phase services, including submittal and RFI review, field observation, and record drawing preparation.
  • Conduct field work including site reconnaissance, manhole and structure inspection support, flow monitoring coordination, and construction observation.
  • Coordinate directly with engineering partners, client staff, and InterAgency colleagues on assigned tasks.
  • Contribute technical content to SOQs, proposals, scopes of work, and fee estimates.
  • Check and review the work of junior engineers and technical staff as the practice grows.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • 5+ years of progressive engineering experience with a primary focus on water and wastewater conveyance (gravity sewers and interceptors, force mains, water transmission and distribution mains, pumping and lift stations, diversion and flow control structures, and/or tunnels and trenchless construction).
  • Current Professional Engineer (PE) license, or EIT certification with PE examinations scheduled or completed. Licensure in Washington, DC, Maryland, or Virginia preferred; candidates eligible for licensure by reciprocity will be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting water or wastewater capital programs in a technical capacity.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry design and analysis tasks to completion with limited day-to-day direction.
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic principles as applied to pressurized and gravity systems, and experience with hydraulic modeling or design software.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD/Civil 3D and GIS.
  • Clear technical writing, with experience preparing technical memoranda, calculation packages, or design reports.
  • Willingness to perform field work at active water and wastewater facilities and construction sites.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites throughout the DC metro region.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience supporting water resources and environmental infrastructure projects in the DC–Maryland–Virginia region.
  • Experience with InfoWorks ICM, SewerGEMS, WaterGEMS, or comparable platforms.
Employment Conditions:

  • Work conditions & location: Regular presence at client and home office locations throughout the DC metro region.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to perform essential duties satisfactorily with reasonable accommodation.
  • Work is generally done sitting, talking, hearing, and typing. Visual acuity to use a keyboard, prepare and analyze data and figures; transcribing, viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
  • Periodic site visits require the ability to traverse uneven terrain and active construction sites, wear personal protective equipment, and observe confined space and utility site safety protocols.
Compensation & Benefits:
  • Salary range: $110,000 – $140,000, commensurate with experience
