The Project Engineer will play a key role in the delivery of a major construction project involving multiple engineering partners, equipment suppliers, and construction organizations.
Acting as an owner's engineering and project execution representative, this position will provide technical and execution oversight for designated systems, project areas, and work packages. The Project Engineer will coordinate engineering, procurement, construction, project controls, and commissioning activities to support efficient progression from detailed design through field execution and final turnover.
The role requires close collaboration with project leadership, engineering contractors, procurement, construction teams, Operations, Maintenance, EHS, Project Controls, and other key stakeholders. A primary focus will be identifying and resolving technical and execution challenges while ensuring assigned scopes remain aligned with approved safety, quality, cost, schedule, operability, and overall project requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Take ownership of assigned project systems, areas, or work packages and serve as a primary owner's engineering contact for coordination between internal stakeholders, engineering contractors, equipment suppliers, and construction teams.
- Manage multidisciplinary engineering interfaces and ensure design responsibilities, scope boundaries, technical inputs, deliverables, and priorities are clearly defined and coordinated across participating engineering organizations.
- Review engineering documents and vendor information, including drawings, specifications, calculations, equipment data sheets, technical submittals, and construction work packages. Confirm deliverables meet project requirements and applicable standards while addressing constructability, safety, reliability, operability, and maintainability.
- Coordinate technical reviews and obtain appropriate input from Operations, Maintenance, E&I, Reliability, EHS, Commissioning, and other project stakeholders.
- Drive technical matters through resolution, including RFIs, field questions, design clarifications, engineering action items, installation issues, and proposed design modifications. Ensure changes are properly documented and processed through established project change-control and Management of Change (MOC) processes.
- Support procurement and supplier activities through the preparation and review of technical requisitions, bid documentation, technical evaluations, vendor drawings and submittals, and technical clarifications. Coordinate engineering activities required to protect equipment and material delivery schedules.
- Provide field engineering support throughout construction, including site inspections, walkdowns, constructability reviews, contractor coordination, and resolution of installation challenges. Verify field execution is consistent with approved engineering documents and project requirements.
- Partner with Project Management and Project Controls to evaluate engineering and construction performance, including progress, schedule dependencies, commitments, cost trends, forecasts, and project changes. Identify potential risks or variances early and assist in developing appropriate mitigation and recovery strategies.
- Integrate applicable EHS requirements and expectations throughout engineering and construction execution. Participate in hazard reviews, safety discussions, field activities, and other initiatives that promote safe project delivery.
- Coordinate with Operations, Maintenance, Reliability, Electrical & Instrumentation, Safety, Environmental, Construction, and Commissioning teams to facilitate tie-ins, outages, system completion, commissioning, startup readiness, turnover, and final acceptance.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Civil, Electrical, or another relevant Engineering discipline is preferred.
- Candidates with a degree in Construction Management or a comparable technical background may also be considered when supported by relevant industrial project experience.
Professional Experience
- A minimum of 5years of relevant engineering, project engineering, or project execution experience is preferred, ideally within chemical processing, petrochemical, refining, oil & gas, power generation, or another heavy-industrial environment.
- Experience supporting detailed engineering and/or construction on major capital projects is highly desirable, particularly involving coordination with third-party engineering firms, EPC/EPCM organizations, equipment vendors, and construction contractors.
- Previous field, construction-site, or operating-plant experience is preferred. Candidates should be comfortable evaluating practical considerations including constructability, equipment access, installation constraints, maintainability, and operational requirements.
Skills & Capabilities
The successful candidate should demonstrate:
- Strong personal ownership and accountability for assigned scope, with attention to safety, technical quality, cost, schedule, and successful completion.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with engineering disciplines, project leadership, construction personnel, plant teams, contractors, and equipment suppliers.
- Ability to recognize and clearly communicate issues requiring escalation, management direction, or timely decision-making.
- Strong planning, coordination, and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple engineering and construction priorities concurrently.
- Effective problem-solving and decision-making abilities, including meeting facilitation, action tracking, stakeholder coordination, and driving issues through closure.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Familiarity with Primavera P6, engineering and document management systems, engineering deliverable tracking, RFIs, submittals, change management systems, and other major-project execution tools is preferred.
