Project Engineer - Heavy Civil Construction

Basic Position Summary: Assist the Superintendent and Project Manager in managing all aspects of a construction project, including financial administration, cost reporting, and field activities. This position is primarily field-based.

Responsibilities/Functions

  • Assist with pre-construction activities such as planning, design, and interpretation of drawings.
  • Understand specifications, drawings, standards, and scope of work for subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Communicate and reinforce all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Interpret specifications, designs, and drawings; prepare quantity takeoffs.
  • Support the preparation of drawings, sketches, change orders, and estimates.
  • Verify work-in-place quantities for invoicing and pay quantities.
  • Maintain submittal logs and review submittals and shop drawings promptly.
  • Ensure accurate completion of craft time cards and verify related cost codes.
  • Maintain as-built drawings and post RFIs, bulletins, and ASIs as needed.
  • Keep RFI logs updated.
  • Participate in constructability reviews and value engineering.
  • Develop and administer project engineering procedures and track documentation.
  • Take weekly photographs of the jobsite.
  • Coordinate with the Safety Department to maintain safety records.
  • Assist in quality control activities.
  • Help prepare project status reports and participate in meetings; document minutes.
  • Support project close-out activities.
  • Assist with estimates as needed.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Four-year engineering degree or equivalent technical training and experience.
  • 2-4 years of field construction experience.
  • E.I.T. preferred but not required.
  • Ability to mentor less experienced personnel.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting plans.
  • Strong understanding of cost analysis and estimating.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to travel as required.

Physical Demands

Regularly required to carry tools and equipment, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and see and hear well. Must stand, walk, and work on uneven ground, often wearing steel-toed boots and PPE. Frequently lift/move up to 50 pounds and work in outside or confined spaces. Tasks are repetitive and performed according to set procedures.
