Job description

Project Engineer

The Nuclear Reactor Laboratory is looking for a Project Engineer to support experimental design, operation, and data‑collection activities that advance the Laboratory’s research mission.

  • Lead and coordinate a wide range of experimental design, operation, and data‑taking activities.
  • Work independently and as part of a team to coordinate multiple research projects.
  • Create and maintain CAD models to support NRL research and experiment design, irradiation facility upgrades, publications, and facility planning.
  • Perform work in designated lab areas using safe practices in industrial hazards, radiation areas, and radioactive contamination areas, including use of a nuclear reactor.
  • Collaborate with NRL staff and students on experiment construction, operations, and disposal.
  • Conduct post‑irradiation handling and examination of samples in hot cells and glove boxes.
  • Assess equipment needs, schedule maintenance and repairs, and keep supplies stocked.
  • Perform basic analysis of experiment data, ensuring accuracy and compliance with quality assurance protocols.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Applied Sciences, or related technical field.
  • Minimum of two years related experience in a research environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently in regulated laboratory radiation and contamination environments.

Preferred:

  • Experience drafting and producing fabrication drawings.
  • Master’s degree.
