Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • 3–7 years of civil/geotechnical/construction engineering experience.
  • PE license preferred or can obtain licensure within ~6 months.
  • Experience in geotechnical engineering, construction observation, or materials testing.
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and project management skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

  • Manage civil/geotechnical projects from investigation through construction support.
  • Perform geotechnical evaluations, foundation recommendations, slope stability, pavement design, and earth retention studies.
  • Support construction observation, field inspections, and materials testing activities.
  • Review field reports and project documentation for quality and accuracy.
  • Prepare engineering reports, proposals, recommendations, and client deliverables.
  • Coordinate with clients, contractors, architects, and project teams during execution.
  • Support multiple projects while maintaining schedules, budgets, and quality standards.
  • Mentor field technicians and junior engineers to grow the office capabilities.

Work Setting: Primarily onsite in Bozeman, MT with limited hybrid flexibility

Travel: Approximately 20% local field work supporting projects throughout Bozeman, Big Sky, Yellowstone, and surrounding areas

Compensation: Competitive base salary with discretionary bonus opportunity

Position Summary

A well-established geotechnical and civil engineering consulting firm is seeking a Project Engineer to join its growing Bozeman, Montana office. This role offers the opportunity to work on a diverse portfolio of commercial, residential, municipal, and resort infrastructure projects throughout Southwest Montana.

This is an excellent opportunity for a civil or geotechnical engineer who enjoys balancing office engineering with field work. The successful candidate will support geotechnical investigations, construction observation, materials testing, project management, and client communication while working alongside a collaborative team in one of the fastest-growing regions in the Mountain West.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage civil and geotechnical engineering projects from investigation through construction support
  • Perform geotechnical engineering evaluations, foundation recommendations, slope stability analyses, pavement design, and earth retention studies
  • Support construction observation, field inspections, and construction materials testing activities
  • Review field reports, laboratory testing, and project documentation to ensure quality and technical accuracy
  • Prepare engineering reports, proposals, recommendations, and client deliverables
  • Coordinate with clients, contractors, architects, and project teams throughout project execution
  • Support multiple projects while maintaining schedules, budgets, and quality standards
  • Mentor field technicians and junior engineers while helping build the capabilities of the growing office
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline
  • Approximately 3–7 years of relevant civil, geotechnical, or construction engineering experience
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred or the ability to obtain licensure within approximately six months
  • Experience with geotechnical engineering, construction observation, construction materials testing, or civil project engineering
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and project management skills
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with multidisciplinary project teams
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to perform both office and field work
Preferred Qualifications
  • Geotechnical engineering experience
  • Construction materials testing (CMT) or construction observation background
  • Experience supporting commercial, residential, municipal, heavy civil, or resort infrastructure projects
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers or field staff
  • Previous consulting engineering experience
