Job description

Capital Project Engineer – Manufacturing

We are partnering with a multi-billion-dollar national manufacturing corporation seeking an experienced Capital Project Engineer to join its plant engineering team. This is an excellent opportunity for a hands‑on engineer who enjoys managing capital improvement projects from initial concept and design through equipment installation, commissioning, and startup.

The facility is a high-volume, 24/7 continuous manufacturing operation investing significantly in capital improvements, equipment modernization, automation, and production efficiency.

The ideal candidate will have a strong mechanical engineering background and proven experience independently managing capital projects within a heavy industrial manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the full lifecycle of capital projects, including concept development, engineering design, scope definition, budgeting, scheduling, procurement, installation, commissioning, and startup.
  • Develop project scopes, preliminary designs, cost estimates, capital expenditure justifications, and execution plans.
  • Lead capital projects involving new production equipment, manufacturing process improvements, plant infrastructure, automation, and material handling systems.
  • Coordinate with plant operations, maintenance, engineering, procurement, production, and external contractors to successfully execute projects within an active 24/7 manufacturing environment.
  • Utilize AutoCAD or comparable engineering design software to develop and review equipment layouts, drawings, and project specifications.
  • Manage engineering contractors, equipment suppliers, and installation vendors to ensure project deliverables meet technical, budgetary, and scheduling requirements.
  • Oversee multidisciplinary projects involving mechanical, electrical, controls, structural, and automation systems.
  • Identify opportunities to improve plant efficiency, equipment reliability, production capacity, and overall operational performance.
  • Ensure projects comply with applicable safety, engineering, and manufacturing standards.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years of capital project engineering experience supporting manufacturing plant operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage capital projects from initial concept and design through installation, commissioning and completion.
  • Experience developing project scopes, engineering specifications, budgets and schedules.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD or comparable engineering design software.
  • Experience with Microsoft Project or similar project scheduling and financial tracking tools.
  • Strong understanding of equipment installation, manufacturing operations and coordination of capital projects within an operating industrial facility.
  • Proven ability to manage outside engineering firms, contractors, and equipment vendors with minimal supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering with 7+ years of capital project experience in heavy industrial or continuous-process manufacturing.
  • Experience implementing new production equipment, automated manufacturing systems, and plant modernization projects.
  • Knowledge of Mechanical Integrity (MI), Process Safety Management (PSM), and applicable industrial safety standards.
  • Experience with multidisciplinary projects involving mechanical, electrical, controls, and structural engineering.
  • PMP certification or formal project management training.
  • Background in high-volume manufacturing, building materials, paper, packaging, chemical processing, or similar industrial environments.
Why Consider This Opportunity?
  • Join a financially strong, nationally recognized manufacturing organization with significant ongoing capital investment.
  • Work at a major production facility with a diverse range of projects involving industrial processing equipment, continuous manufacturing systems, robotics, automation, and advanced material handling.
  • Take ownership of capital projects from concept through completion rather than focusing exclusively on maintenance or routine plant support.
  • Collaborate with an established engineering and operations team while maintaining independence in project execution.
  • Competitive compensation and benefits package.
