Job description

The First Deputy Commissioner oversees the Business Development & Special Events Division, the Communications Division, the Lifeguard Division, and Government Relations for NYC Parks. We seek a candidate with excellent organizational and time-management skills, the ability to manage competing priorities, and the capacity to remain calm under pressure. The ideal candidate is a strong communicator capable of confident and effective collaboration with team members and other departments to ensure timely completion of tasks and projects.

Major Responsibilities
  1. Provide executive-level support to the NYC Parks First Deputy Commissioner with a high degree of initiative, judgment, and discretion.
  2. Assist in managing a complex schedule for the First Deputy Commissioner, handling frequent re-prioritizations that often require independent decision-making.
  3. Proactively identify and prioritize situations requiring the First Deputy Commissioner’s attention through independent analysis and judgment.
  4. Coordinate resources and assemble appropriate reference and backup materials for all meetings and events.
  5. Conduct research and prepare presentations, briefings, and reports.
  6. Support the Chief of Staff and Deputy Chief of Staff in Government Relations projects.
  7. Provide outstanding customer service and administrative support for the day-to-day operations of the First Deputy Commissioner’s office, including answering phones and drafting correspondence to constituents.
  8. Perform other duties as assigned by the First Deputy Commissioner and the Chief of Staff.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or related activities; or
  2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or related activities; or
  3. Equivalent education and/or experience, with at least one year of experience as described above.
Preferred Skills
  1. Two to five years of experience in coordination, management, or similar roles.
  2. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  3. Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  4. Exceptional organizational skills, including managing multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  5. Experience handling sensitive and confidential information.
  6. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
  7. A valid New York State driver’s license.
