Job description

Project Developer (full-time)

Location: Remote

Salary Range: $87,000 - $110,000

Start Date: May 1, 2025 or thereafter

Hourglass Climate is a USA-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with the mission to strategically research the safety and efficacy of mineral-based Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE) techniques for responsible carbon removal and climate impact at scale.

The ocean is our greatest resource for capturing hard-to-abate, and historical, carbon dioxide emissions, a non-negotiable part of limiting climate warming to 2ºC, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). OAE via alkaline minerals has the potential for permanent, gigatonne-scale carbon dioxide removal (CDR) with co-benefits such as a reduction in ocean acidification. However, targeted, independent and integrated research that rapidly de-risks the key uncertainties around OAE techniques is urgently needed. To do just that, Hourglass brings together an ecosystem of scientists to conduct model, laboratory, and field research for the public benefit.

Job Description:

We are seeking a driven and strategic self-starter to spearhead the development of an ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) field trial. Strong organizational skills are essential, as the candidate will be responsible for managing complex workstreams, identifying and coordinating project partners, and systematically assessing potential sites across multiple lenses (sociopolitical, logistical, regulatory etc). The optimal project site may be international, and as such, strong cross-cultural experience and sensitivity is required, along with excellent communication skills. Experience working with, and communicating, technical matter is essential. As a key member of our team, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of climate change mitigation by identifying high-impact project locations, securing a project site, and establishing robust community engagement strategies to advance R&D in the field of carbon dioxide removal.

We believe that many different employment backgrounds could be a strong fit for this role. Key traits for success include ambition, a driven and proactive work style, strong communication skills, and a keen willingness to learn from our science team.

Hourglass has secured one year of funding for this position. Meaningful traction in the development of an OAE field trial site during this period will greatly increase the potential for further funding.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Establish and manage a systematic approach to project site identification and development
  2. Identify target project locations, both local and international
  3. Work with Hourglass team members to establish scientific site priorities and requirements
  4. Identify project sites based on logistical, technical, and other relevant requirements
  5. Conduct regulatory reviews
  6. Build meaningful partnerships with regulators, industry, communities, and others in target regions
  7. Create stakeholder engagement plans and work directly with groups from national to local throughout project development cycles
  8. Drive permitting of projects, including engaging directly with regulators
  9. Find and interface with project funders
  10. Develop supply chain partnerships
  11. Work across timezones for international site development

About You:

  1. Highly driven, ambitious
  2. A bachelor’s degree (minimum), or preferably Masters. Relevant field could include: Marine/Climate Science, Policy, International Relations, Project Management, Sustainable Development
  3. 3+ years of proven work experience as a project developer or similar role, ideally in a marine industry, though not required
  4. Experience in two or more of the following:
    1. Negotiating contracts, establishing partnerships, and collaborative project development
    2. Interpreting regulatory requirements, creating permitting documents
    3. Led or contributed to projects with global scope and understand the nuances of working across different regulatory and cultural frameworks
    4. Stakeholder management and relationship building, including commercial counterparts, regulatory staff, community members, and other relevant stakeholders
    5. Experience collaborating with scientists
    6. Proven ability to work with technical subject matter
    7. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to present complex information clearly and concisely both internally and to relevant stakeholders
    8. Demonstrated proficiency in technical and financial analysis
    9. Strong problem-solving skills with a focus on efficient decision-making and rapid action
    10. Solid organizational and time management skills, able to prioritize tasks effectively
    11. Able to thrive in a fast-moving environment
    12. Has a no-task-too-small mindset and is team oriented

Compensation:

Salary is based on the candidate's experience and ranges from $87,000 - $110,000. Additionally, Hourglass offers a generous benefits package.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion:

Hourglass is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Hourglass is dedicated to transparent recruitment, hiring, and promotion processes. Candidates with diverse backgrounds and experiences are strongly encouraged to apply.
