The City Bar Justice Center (CBJC) seeks an enthusiastic and organized individual committed to equal access to justice to join our team as a Project Coordinator, a role similar to a legal assistant or paralegal. CBJC annually provides high-quality, free civil legal services benefiting over 27,000 New Yorkers who lack resources to hire private counsel. CBJC collaborates with the New York City Bar Association, law firms, corporate legal departments, law schools, courts, and other stakeholders. Last year, over 2,200 pro bono attorneys donated services to support clinics and client work across CBJC’s legal projects.

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as the first point of contact for clients seeking legal assistance, conduct eligibility screening and client interviews, and provide case assessment support.
  • Maintain client and volunteer databases and diligently track case statistics.
  • Assist in preparing grant applications, reports, and other fundraising activities.
  • Provide administrative support by answering phones, setting up client appointments, and providing caring follow-up to clients in vulnerable moments.
  • Support logistics for virtual and in-person training programs, legal clinics, and outreach events.
  • Conduct legal research and draft initial papers or applications under attorney supervision.
  • Liaise with attorney volunteers from law firms and corporate legal departments.
  • Provide general administrative support, including new programming within CBJC projects.
Experience, Skills & Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a professional setting.
  • At least 6 months of relevant work experience or internships.
  • Strong organizational, data-entry, and project management skills; high attention to detail; excellent communication skills; ability to interact professionally with clients, volunteers, and staff.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365; ability to learn LegalServer and other technologies quickly.
  • Ability to connect with diverse backgrounds; enthusiasm for public interest legal work, social justice, and racial equity.
  • Team player with respectful interaction skills.
  • Proficiency in a non-English language is a plus but not required.

Start date: Late May or mid-June, with a minimum two-year commitment. In-person work in Manhattan on a hybrid schedule (2-3 days/week). Occasional local travel may be required.

This position is covered by Local 153, Office and Professional Employees International Union, with a starting salary of at least $51,250 for a 35-hour week, plus benefits including paid time off, health plans, 401K, and more.

Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. (no visa sponsorship available).
