Job description

Job Posting:

Project Coordinator

Department: City Bar Justice Center

Reports to: Project Director

FLSA: Non-Exempt

The City Bar Justice Center (CBJC) seeks an enthusiastic and organized individual committed to equal access to justice to join our team as a Project Coordinator, a role similar to a legal assistant or paralegal. CBJC provides high-quality, free civil legal services benefiting over 27,000 New Yorkers annually who lack resources to hire private counsel. We collaborate with the New York City Bar Association, law firms, corporate legal departments, solo practitioners, law schools, courts, and other stakeholders. Last year, over 2,200 pro bono attorneys donated services to support clinics and client work across CBJC’s dozen civil legal projects.

CBJC Project Coordinators work closely with attorney Project Directors to manage responsibilities for specific practice areas, including:

  • Serving as the first contact for clients seeking legal help, conducting eligibility screening, client interviews, and case assessments.
  • Maintaining client and volunteer databases and tracking case statistics diligently.
  • Assisting in grant applications, reports, and fundraising activities.
  • Providing administrative support such as answering phones, scheduling appointments, and following up with clients, often during vulnerable moments.
  • Supporting logistical arrangements for training programs, legal clinics, and outreach events.
  • Conducting legal research and drafting initial documents under attorney supervision.
  • Liaising with attorney volunteers from law firms and legal departments.
  • Providing general administrative support for new programming within CBJC projects.
Experience, Skills & Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
  • At least 6 months of relevant work or internship experience.
  • Strong organizational, data-entry, and project management skills; attention to detail; excellent communication skills; ability to interact professionally via phone and in person; reliable and timely.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365; ability to learn LegalServer and other technology quickly.
  • Ability to connect with diverse backgrounds; enthusiasm for public interest legal work, serving under-resourced communities, and promoting justice and equity.
  • Team player capable of respectful interactions with clients, volunteers, government staff, and colleagues.
  • Proficiency in a non-English language is a plus but not required.

Ideal candidates can start in late May or mid-June and commit for at least two years. The role requires in-person work in Manhattan on a hybrid schedule (2-3 days in-office weekly) with occasional local travel for clinics or support events.

This position is represented by the Local 153, Office and Professional Employees International Union, with a starting salary of at least $51,250 for a 35-hour week, plus benefits including paid time off, health plans, 401K, and more. Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S. without visa sponsorship.

To apply: Send a tailored cover letter, resume, and three professional references.

The City Bar Justice Center is an equal opportunity employer, committed to diversity and inclusion, encouraging applications from underrepresented communities. We ensure equal employment opportunity without discrimination based on race, gender, disability, or other protected characteristics, and provide reasonable accommodations as needed.
