Job summary

Marathon Petroleum Corporation in Carson, California is seeking a Project Controls Specialist (Cost & Scheduler) to lead cost control, budgeting and scheduling on capital and expense programs ranging from $2MM to $100MM+. You will collaborate with project teams across engineering, procurement, construction and accounting to optimize performance.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED with 5+ years project controls in refining or petrochemical, or a Bachelor's degree with 4+ years project controls experience.
  • Must have cost and scheduling experience.
  • Knowledge of stage gate and development processes; multi-discipline estimating and field construction experience.
  • Proficient in Microsoft 365: Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Working knowledge with Primavera P6.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; able to work in a team environment.
  • Must wear PPE in refinery and be able to pass hair drug test and physical.
  • Valid driver’s license and legal authorization to work in the US without visa sponsorship.
  • Travel 5% or less; able to work one of onsite schedules: 9/80, 5/40, or 4/1.

  • Identifies project risks and opportunities; supports mitigation plans and contingency budgets.
  • Evaluates and implements change controls considering cost and schedule impacts.
  • Develops and delivers progress reports, dashboards, and executive summaries.
  • Ensures timely communication of project performance to stakeholders.

Job Summary The Los Angeles Refinery (LAR) is seeking a Project Controls Specialist (Cost and Scheduler) to support the delivery of capital and expense projects. The role entails leading and advancing Project Controls principles and techniques while supporting a portfolio of projects ranging from $2MM to $100MM plus. The Project Controls Specialist will work closely with Project Management, Engineering, Supply Chain (Procurement), Construction and Accounting personnel to ensure projects are planned and effectively managed so that performance is continuously improved.

The available onsite schedules for the position are 9/80, 5/40 or 4/1, after hours calls are required once a month. Core Business hours are: 8 AM - 3 PM.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepares and manages project budgets, forecasts, and cost reports.

  • Identifies, assesses, and monitors project risks and opportunities.
  • Supports development of mitigation plans and contingency budgets.
  • Evaluates and implements project change controls, assessing impacts on cost and schedule.
  • Develops and delivers high-quality progress reports, dashboards, and executive summaries.
  • Ensures timely communication of project performance to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provides input to monthly and ad-hoc management reviews.
  • Utilizes project controls tools and systems effectively.
  • Contributes to the development and enhancement of project controls processes and tools.
  • Ensures adherence to company project controls standards, procedures, and contractual requirements.
  • Support audits, reviews, and compliance activities.
  • Works closely with project managers, engineers, accounting teams, corporate groups and contractors to ensure aligned project execution.
  • Mentor and support junior project controls staff.
  • Identifies opportunities for process improvements and implement best practices.
  • Stays current with industry & corporate trends and advancements in project controls methodologies.
Education, Experience and Skills
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED and at least five (5) years of project controls experience in refining or petrochemical industry experience, OR a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or similar field and at least four (4) years of project controls experience.
  • Must have both cost and scheduling experience.
  • Must have knowledge and understanding of project stage gate and development processes, stage gate deliverables and will have previous multi-discipline estimating experience, field construction experience and a track record of performance delivery.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft 365: Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Working knowledge with Primavera P6.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work in a fast-paced environment; have strong verbal and written communication skills and embrace a team environment.
  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator), be able to physically perform all tasks in the field and take hair drug test and physical.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.
  • Travel Requirement is 5% or less.
  • Must be able to work one of the onsite schedules for the position which are 9/80, 5/40 or 4/1.
  • Core Business hours are: 8 AM - 3 PM.
  • Must be able to handle after hours calls once a month.
Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or similar field is preferred. Relocation is available.
