What You Will Do

This position is open for external candidates only to apply. This position will be filled at either the Project Controls 3 or Project Controls 4, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Project Controls 3 ($94,500.00 - $154,600.00)

Performs cost estimating, analysis, and control activities. Performs schedule development, maintenance, and monitoring activities. Supports project or program organizational and administrative activities, when delegated. Supervises and provides technical direction for cost engineering and/or planning/scheduling activities, when delegated. Ensures work is completed as scheduled. Identifies trends for management attention. Has wide-ranging experience, uses professional concepts and Laboratory objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways. Frequently contributes to the development of new theories and methods. Considered expert in field within the organization. Develops resolutions to complex problems that require the frequent use of creativity and where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Work is accomplished without considerable direction. May coordinate activities of other personnel. Exerts significant latitude in determining objectives of assignment, and determines the methods and procedures needed for new assignments.

Project Controls 4 ($114,700.00 - $191,200.00)

As mentioned above the level 4 will have additional in dept responsibilities. Has broad expertise or unique knowledge, uses skills to contribute to development of objectives and principles and to achieve goals in creative and effective ways. Develops advanced concepts, techniques, and standards based on professional principles and theories. Viewed as expert in field within the Laboratory. Works on unusually significant, unique or complex issues, provides solutions that are highly creative and where analysis of situations or data requires an evaluation of intangibles. Has impact on success of future concepts, products or technologies. Works under consultative direction toward predetermined long-range targets. Assignments are often self-initiated. Virtually self-supervisory. Uses independent judgment for determining course of action to accomplish objectives. Uses wide latitude in the methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.

Additional Requirements for Project Controls 4

• Supervises/directs obtaining required schedule information by all disciplines. Supervises identification of schedule restraints and effect on total project schedule. Works with all departments to ensure understanding of total project schedule needs. Responsible for total integration of schedule activities. Identifies schedule considerations and problems resulting from inter-discipline or group restraints and interfaces.


• Monitors and reports critical path and schedule performance of the total project. Supervises project schedule analysis and studies of problem areas to determine criticality of schedule activities. Recommends alternatives for schedule improvement to project team for discussion and/or decision.


• Responsible for preparing and presenting the schedule impact report. Responsible for leading the development and review of schedule recovery plans, including evaluation of additional resources/costs required to effect such plans.


• Researches, assembles, and/or evaluates information or data regarding industry practices or applicable regulatory changes affecting policies or programs; recommends sound, practical solutions to complex issues.


• Understands and adheres to all Laboratory and industry regulatory guidance and governance.


• Ensures all results, processes, and final products meet quality specifications and are completed according to established requirements.


• Supports development of project controls standards and procedures. Supervises and supports the compilation of historical data.


• Creates and implements measurement systems for established processes, analyzes performance metric results, and identifies improvements. Uses statistical tools to analyze metrics (e.g., regression, analysis of variance, correlation), and analyzes measurement systems to identify bias, repeatability, and stability issues.

Project Controls 3:

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable.

Project Controls 4:

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 10 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be expected.

Desired Qualifications

• Knowledge and intermediate experience with the implementation and maintenance of EVMS principles and techniques that complies with EIA-748 in U.S. Government facilities, programs, and/or projects.


• Experience in working in an EVMS environment.


• Experience in working on large-scale programs or projects.


• Experience working with the Department of Energy (DOE) at headquarters or field office level, and/or with state and federal regulators.

Work Location

The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. USA. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 2 years.

Additional Details

Clearance: Q

Position will be cleared to this level. Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad. Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test

The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Project Controls Engineer 4: Incentive Compensation Program

Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
