Job summary

The role supports budgeting, cost tracking, and precise billing for both commercial and government-funded projects while ensuring FAR/DFARS compliance and internal controls.

The position collaborates with operations and accounting teams to deliver accurate project financials, manage budgets, and provide insightful cost analyses in a dynamic professional services

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• 8 years of accounting or project accounting experience.
• Experience with government contracting and FAR-allowable costs preferred.
• Proficiency in Excel; BC365 GovCon system experience preferred.
• Ability to work with cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

• Set up new projects in the accounting system, including budgets and cost structures.
• Prepare and process project billings, including time & materials and fixed price contracts.
• Assist with client and government contract billing requirements and documentation.
• Track project costs such as labor, subcontracts, direct expenses, and overhead.
• Support revenue recognition and work in progress (WIP) reporting.
• Monitor budget vs. actual performance and communicate variances to project managers.
• Assist with indirect cost allocations and analysis.
• Support month end close related to project accounting with some general ledger accounting.
• Maintain organized project and contract financial records for audit readiness.

ZAPATA is a full-service architecture and engineering company with operations throughout the Continental United States and Pacific in support of Department of War, federal government, and private sector clients. The Company is seeking a Project Billing Accountant in the Charlotte, NC headquarters.

Position Summary:

The Project Billing Accountant supports the financial management of engineering and architectural project reporting within both commercial and government-funded projects. This role is responsible for project setup, cost tracking, billing, and financial reporting while ensuring compliance with contract requirements, FAR/DFARS regulations, and internal policies. The position works closely with operations and accounting teams to ensure accurate and timely project financials.

• Set up new projects in the accounting system, including budgets and cost structures
• Prepare and process project billings, including time & materials and fixed price contracts
• Assist with client and government contract billing requirements and documentation

• Familiarity with government contracting and FAR‑allowable cost principles preferred
• Exposure to WIP, revenue recognition, and contract administration preferred
• Ability to independently manage multiple projects and deadlines in an evolving environment
• Strong communication and problem‑solving skills
