The engineer serves as a technical leader throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant designs for modern energy storage infrastructure.

Responsibilities
  • Support the design phase and engineer major components for large-scale energy storage projects, particularly battery energy storage systems.
  • Review engineering drawings, recognize inconsistencies, and take corrective action to improve design quality and efficiency.
  • Identify and resolve errors in engineering studies, and recommend future improvements and technical solutions.
  • Prepare detailed technical scopes of work for contracts to ensure clear expectations and deliverables.
  • Support projects from inception through completion by working closely with project managers and cross-functional teams.
  • Influence project teams on key engineering tasks and decisions to align technical solutions with project goals.
  • Stay informed about project progress and technical issues, and communicate updates to relevant stakeholders.
  • Manage project milestones, monitor technical risks, and propose mitigation strategies to keep projects on track.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to integrate major equipment into overall system designs and ensure compatibility.
  • Work with diverse internal and external teams to solve complex problems, improve project opportunities, and integrate systems and controls.
  • Interpret and apply specifications for major equipment purchasing, ensure clear communication with vendors, and propose alternative solutions when needed.
  • Understand permitting requirements for energy storage projects, propose solutions to legal and regulatory challenges, and recommend site design improvements.
  • Perform other related engineering duties as assigned to support project and organizational objectives.
  • Travel up to 25% of the time to project sites and supplier locations for project-specific engineering and coordination activities.
Essential Skills
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in solar or photovoltaic (PV) engineering and/or construction.
  • Strong background in engineering, preferably electrical engineering, with hands-on experience in energy storage or renewable power projects.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas: power electronics, battery storage system design, substation design, or generation tie design.
  • Familiarity with energy storage technologies, including battery chemistries, power conversion units, and DC/DC converters.
  • Knowledge of lithium-ion battery storage safety standards such as UL1973, UL9540, NFPA 855, NFPA 70E, NEC, and applicable IFC/IBC sections.
  • Ability to handle specialized technical tasks independently and make sound engineering judgments.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience working on battery energy storage systems (BESS) within renewable power development, construction, or engineering environments.
  • Familiarity with IEC standards relevant to energy storage and electrical systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and project managers.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a continuous improvement mindset focused on design quality, safety, and efficiency.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and project milestones while maintaining attention to detail and technical accuracy.

This role is based in a corporate office environment that supports large-scale renewable power and energy storage development. The Project BESS Engineer works closely with project managers, engineering teams, and suppliers using modern engineering tools and software to design and oversee battery energy storage systems.
