We are looking for a talented, experienced Architect / Project Manager eager to become an integral part of our studio. pHdesign is a New York City–based architecture practice focused on renovation, adaptive reuse, and high-performance residential projects. Our work is design-driven and environmentally responsible, with the Passive House Institute (PHI) standard used as a design and evaluation tool.

We are a small, collaborative office that values thoughtful design, clear communication, and professional responsibility. We seek rigorous outcomes on every project while maintaining a healthy work/life balance, and we encourage all team members to engage in every phase of project development.

This position reports directly to the partners and requires the ability to work semi-independently while coordinating closely with them as they maintain active client relationships. The successful candidate will represent the office professionally and help guide and support junior staff.

The Ideal Candidate Should Possess The Following Characteristics

  • 6+ years of professional experience in a structured architectural office.
  • Experience leading ground up and renovation projects; residential experience required.
  • Strong design sensibility with excellent technical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a small studio environment and contribute positively to office culture.
  • A self-directed work style with sound judgment and strong people skills.
  • Experience directing teams, delegating tasks, and mentoring junior staff.
  • Ability to manage schedules and meet client budget goals.
  • Working knowledge of New York State, New York City, and New Jersey building codes.
  • Comfort working across all project phases, including SD, DD, CD, and CA.

Technology & Sustainability

  • pHdesign is a Mac-based office.
  • Familiarity with BIM software is preferred; experience with ArchiCAD is a strong plus.
  • Experience with SketchUp, PHPP, and designPH is a plus.
  • Passive House experience is a plus; CPHD/PHPP training will be provided if needed.
  • A genuine interest in high-performance design and building science is essential.
