Arcadis is seeking a mid to senior-level Archaeologist/Cultural Resources Specialist for the Northeast U.S. region.

The role serves as Principal Investigator within the cultural resources team, providing oversight of junior staff and field crews, and assisting with management of client-specific programs and projects. A strong background in environmental planning, NHPA compliance, and field investigations is required.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 7 years of experience in cultural resources management, with field- and office-based roles
  • Working knowledge of Pre-Contact, Historic, and Industrial Archaeology; urban and industrial sites experience
  • Experience supervising field crews
  • Experience completing all aspects of investigations from planning to final report

Job description

Role description:

Arcadis is seeking a mid to senior-level Archaeologist/Cultural Resources Specialist within our cultural resources practice in the Northeast U.S. You will serve as a Principal Investigator (PI) within the Northeast U.S. Cultural Resources team and provide oversight for junior staff and field crews, as well as assist with the management of client-specific programs and projects. You will also provide quality assurance planning and review for execution of cultural resources work in the Northeast U.S. Arcadis is specifically looking for an archaeologist/cultural resource specialist with environmental planning and permitting experience in the general Northeast U.S., however, experience in New York and New Jersey is required. This position requires knowledge and experience working in this part of the U.S. at a federal and state level.

Role accountabilities:

As a Mid- or Senior-level Archaeologist/Cultural Resources Specialist, you will apply your technical knowledge to develop creative, effective, and economical solutions to address project issues. You will be a key cultural resource team member who interacts with project and program managers, and you will work as part of an interdisciplinary environmental team. You will also provide supervision, training, technical direction and mentoring to junior-level staff, when appropriate.

The more technical aspects of your role will be serving as a PI in the Northeast U.S. You will be working on multiple projects including all levels of investigation (Phases I-III, archaeological monitoring). Conducting your own fieldwork, leading field assessments, and managing archaeological field staff and archaeological field crews (including subcontractors) will be required. As such, this position will also require a working knowledge of GPS systems and the ability to walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, as well as carry supplies weighing up to 40 pounds. Up to 40% travel, including overnight travel, is expected in this role.

You will use your excellent technical writing and communications skills to provide guidance and senior technical review on project documents prepared by junior staff as well as prepare technical analysis and documents of your own.

Qualifications & Experience:
  • Meets the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards in archaeology
  • Master’s degree in archaeology or a related field
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in cultural resources management, with a combination of field- and office-based experience and roles
  • Working knowledge of Pre-Contact, Historic, and Industrial Archaeology. Experience in urban sites and industrial sites is necessary
  • Demonstrated knowledge of cultural resources management and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA).
  • Proven experience supervising field crews
  • Experience completing all aspects of investigations from planning (e.g., budgets and proposals) to final report

Actual salaries will vary and are based on several factors, such as experience, education, budget, internal equity, project and location.
