Job summary

Thompson Construction Services is seeking an experienced Project Accountant to manage accounting and financial reporting for assigned construction projects.

In this role, you will collaborate with project managers, operations, subcontractors, vendors, customers, and leadership to maintain job-cost records, coordinate billing, support monthly close, and analyze project performance for informed decision-making.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • Three+ years of accounting experience.
  • Construction accounting, project accounting, or job-cost accounting experience.
  • Experience with general ledger, AP/AR, project billing, retainage, and change-order accounting.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily and monthly accounting functions, including journal entries, reconciliations, and general ledger transactions.
  • Maintain accurate job-cost records for assigned construction projects.
  • Prepare and submit customer invoices with progress, schedule-of-values, and time-and-material billings.
  • Review contracts and purchase orders for billing requirements and retainage provisions.
  • Enter and review vendor invoices and subcontractor pay applications for accuracy and compliance.
  • Monitor project budgets, committed costs, actual costs, change orders, and profitability.
  • Assist project managers with forecasts, cost projections, cash-flow planning, and financial analysis.
  • Analyze project financial performance and provide findings to management.
  • Track accounts receivable and assist with collections.
  • Maintain subcontractor compliance records and payment documentation.
  • Prepare recurring and ad hoc financial reports for review and decision-making.
  • Support WIP reporting, revenue recognition, and month-end close.

  • Prepare and submit customer invoices in coordination with project managers, including progress, schedule-of-values, and time-and-material billings.
  • Review contracts and purchase orders for billing requirements, retainage provisions, and required supporting documentation.
  • Enter and review vendor invoices and subcontractor pay applications for accuracy, approval, cost coding, and contract compliance.
  • Monitor project budgets, committed costs, actual costs, change orders, contract values, and profitability.
  • Assist project managers with project forecasts, cost projections, cash-flow planning, and financial analysis.
  • Analyze project financial performance and budget variances and provide findings or recommendations to management.
  • Track accounts receivable and assist with follow-up on outstanding invoices and collections.
  • Maintain subcontractor compliance records, including agreements, insurance certificates, lien waivers, and supporting payment documentation.
  • Prepare recurring and ad hoc financial reports for operational review and decision-making.
  • Support monthly work-in-progress reporting, revenue recognition, reconciliations, and closing processes.
  • Assist in preparing financial information in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Provide requested information to internal and external auditors and assist in responding to audit findings or recommendations.
  • Investigate and resolve billing, job-cost, coding, and account discrepancies.
  • Maintain complete, organized, and audit-ready electronic project records.
  • Assist with project setup, financial closeout, and final reconciliation.
  • Perform other accounting and project-support responsibilities as business needs require.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • At least three years of accounting experience.
  • Construction accounting, project accounting, or job-cost accounting experience.
  • Working knowledge of general ledger accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, project billing, retainage, and change-order accounting.
  • Intermediate or advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience with accounting or construction-management software.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent attention to detail and consistent follow-through.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple active projects and recurring deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and remain accountable in a remote or hybrid environment.
  • Ability to handle confidential financial and business information professionally.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Accounting experience with a mid-sized construction, engineering, or specialty-contracting organization.
  • Experience preparing work-in-progress reports and analyzing project profitability.
  • Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP.
  • CPA license or progress toward professional certification.
  • Experience supporting civil, concrete, electrical, industrial, utility, or infrastructure projects.
  • Advanced financial-analysis and reporting skills.
Work Arrangement

This position may be structured as remote or hybrid depending on the selected candidate’s location, qualifications, and the company’s operational needs. The employee must have reliable internet access and an appropriate workspace for remote duties.

Periodic in-person meetings, training, office visits, or project-related travel may be required. Approximately 0–5% travel is anticipated.

Compensation

The anticipated salary range is $52,000–$70,000 annually, based on the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and demonstrated construction-accounting capabilities.
