Job summary

PEG Staffing & Recruiting seeks an experienced Project Accountant in the St. Louis area to oversee accounting for a portfolio of construction projects from setup to completion.

You will partner with Project Managers and operations to monitor budgets, costs, and variances, manage billing and lien documentation, and ensure accurate project financial reporting and compliance.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of accounting experience with a focus on construction
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• Experience with job costing and project-based accounting
• Experience with construction billing and project financial reporting
• Ability to analyze budgets, costs, and variances
• Strong attention to detail and multi-project management
• Collaborative work with project managers and operations teams
• Proficiency with accounting/ERP software (Vista/Viewpoint or similar)

Responsibilities

• Assemble and manage accounting activity for an assigned portfolio of projects
• Track project spending against budgets and identify variances
• Prepare and analyze job-cost and project financial reports
• Review project expenses for accuracy and allocation
• Process labor, material, equipment, subcontractor, and vendor transactions
• Handle customer billing and supporting documentation
• Prepare construction-specific billing (AIA-style pay apps)
• Track retainage and project receivables/payables
• Review subcontractor payments and vendor invoices
• Maintain lien waivers, insurance, and compliance records
• Resolve accounting discrepancies with internal teams or vendors
• Support monthly close for assigned projects
• Provide financial insight to PMs for project decisions
• Identify opportunities to improve project accounting processes

Job description

PEG Staffing & Recruiting is searching for an experienced Project Accountant to join a growing, project-focused organization in the St. Louis area.

This position sits at the intersection of accounting and operations, providing financial oversight for active construction projects from initial setup through completion. You’ll work directly with Project Managers and operational leaders to understand how projects are performing, keep costs and billing on track, and ensure the financial side of each job is accurate and well documented.

What You’ll Be Doing

As a Project Accountant, you’ll take ownership of the accounting activity associated with an assigned portfolio of projects. Responsibilities will include:

• Establish new projects within the accounting system and maintain accurate financial information throughout the life of each job
• Track project spending against established budgets and identify meaningful cost or profitability variances
• Prepare and analyze job-cost and project financial reports
• Review project expenses to ensure costs are accurate and assigned appropriately
• Work with labor, material, equipment, subcontractor, and vendor-related transactions
• Handle customer billing and supporting documentation for assigned projects
• Prepare construction-specific billing, including AIA-style pay applications
• Track retainage and other project-related receivables and payables
• Review subcontractor payment requests and vendor invoices
• Maintain required supporting documentation, including lien waivers, insurance information, and other project compliance records
• Research discrepancies and work with internal teams or vendors to resolve accounting issues
• Assist with tracking committed project costs and anticipated cash requirements
• Support monthly accounting close activities related to assigned projects
• Maintain organized records that support internal controls and audit requirements
• Provide Project Managers with financial information that helps them understand project performance and make informed decisions
• Identify opportunities to strengthen or streamline project accounting processes

  What We’re Looking For

  • 2+ years of relevant accounting experience
  • Construction accounting experience is required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • Working knowledge of job costing and project-based accounting
  • Experience with construction billing and project financial reporting
  • Ability to analyze budgets, costs, and variances rather than simply process transactions
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple active projects and deadlines
  • Comfortable partnering with Project Managers and operational teams
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency with accounting/ERP software; experience with Vista, Viewpoint, or a comparable construction accounting platform is a plus

  Experience supporting an electrical, mechanical, specialty contractor, general contractor, or similar construction environment would translate particularly well to this position.

  Location: St. Louis, MO

  Travel: Approximately 20% travel out of state
