Cary's Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources department is seeking a passionate, organized and adaptable outdoor recreation professional to join our team as the Program Supervisor- Outdoor Adventure!

This position is responsible for overseeing the Bond Park Boathouse and Cary Action Sports Park, ensuring safe operations, managing staff, and coordinating programs for individuals, teams, and groups. The Program Supervisor-Outdoor Adventure serves as the programmatic expert for urban adventure programming, including action sports and emerging recreation trends. This includes developing and implementing experiences such as skateboarding, BMX, scooter, mountain biking, and other non-traditional recreation opportunities.

This position requires flexibility to support program delivery, facility operations, training, special events, and community needs. We are looking for someone who is adaptable and open to working outside of traditional business hours to meet the needs of the role.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Operations & Programs Supervisor - Outdoor Recreation. Supervision is exercised over temporary, seasonal, and contract staff, as well as volunteers.

Typical Tasks
  • Supervises the development, planning, implementation and evaluation of diverse action sports and urban adventure, camps, and facility-based experiences for all ages, ensuring goals and initiatives are realized
  • Develops and implements action sports and urban adventure programming that expands community access, participation, and skill development opportunities
  • Oversees day-to-day operations at Cary Action Sports Park and Bond Park Boathouse, including facility operations, rental operations, concessions, equipment, and customer service standards
  • Recruits, hires, coordinates, supervises, trains and evaluates temporary and seasonal staff, program instructors, contract staff and/or volunteers
  • Develops staffing schedules to cover operational and programmatic needs at sites
  • Oversees program creation, data entry and information pertaining to class participation, registration, program schedules and registration procedures
  • Maintains knowledge of organizations, trends and issues in recreation programming pertinent to program area
  • Maintains assigned facilities including but not limited to, action sports park, boathouse, pump track, skate sites, and climbing boulder
  • Helps promote Outdoor Adventure and PRCR offerings, opportunities and experiences in the community. May prepare communication plans, social media, manage website content, and other promotional material
  • Assists with all outdoor programs and operations
  • Establishes rules and procedures for efficient and effective operations of program area and ensures the implementation and adherence to safety standards and laws
  • Collaborates with other programmers across the PRCR department
  • Responds to public inquiry, feedback and concerns
  • Assists with implementation of other recreation programs and special events
  • Creates agreements for contracted staff/instructors, and special event vendors. Validates that contracts are being followed throughout the year
  • Budgets for assigned program area including operational needs, contracts, staff, vendors and supplies
  • Manages related finance, human resource, and administrative functions required to maintain day-to-day functions and operations of assigned areas
  • Performs other job-related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of adventure programs, particularly BMX, mountain biking, skateboarding, climbing, and the development and implementation of these activities.
  • General knowledge of outdoor adventure programming, recreation administration, facility operations, and the maintenance of ramps and trails, as well as the day-to-day operations of action sports parks.
  • Considerable knowledge of modern programming principles, customer service, risk management, and facility operations.
  • Skilled in interpersonal communication and relationship-building
  • Ability to train and supervise staff
  • Able to interact tactfully and professionally with the public, coworkers, employees, contractors, and community partners
  • Ability to prepare technical and financial reports, operational documentation, and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to work weekends/nights to implement programs, trainings, special events or facility operations and to serve in an on-call capacity to meet operational needs.
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications
Education and Experience

Requires a combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Recreation, Parks and Recreation, Physical Education, Outdoor Recreation or related field.

Requires a minimum of two years of experience in action sports, urban adventure, or outdoor recreation programming AND a minimum of two years of experience supervising full-time, part-time, seasonal or contract staff.

Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following experience:

  • Some experience supervising an outdoor adventure facility.
Physical Requirements

Work requires the employee to lift moderately heavy to heavy items and be able to demonstrate exercises that will be performed on natural surface trails, and action sports equipment. An employee must be able to hear and talk in order to communicate with the public and with groups under instruction. An employee must be able to climb, walk unassisted and move about freely. Visual acuity is needed to read typewritten and handwritten materials and to view a computer terminal.

Conditions of Employment

Requires possession of a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal history check, SBI fingerprinting, motor vehicle records check, education verification and credit history review) and satisfactory reference checks prior to employment

Must be available to work weekends/nights to implement programs, trainings, special events or facility operations.
