Job description

Program Officer, Maine Health Access Foundation

We pursue that mission through a set of goals and strategies anchored in advancing equity. We embrace many practices associated with an approach known as Trust-Based Philanthropy. These include centering relationships and sharing power. Within this framework, the Program Officer will develop and manage activities including grants, policy research, technical assistance, learning and information dissemination, partnership development, and community engagement in two of the foundation’s signature program areas.

Responsibilities

The ideal candidate will be passionate about justice and social change, with experience in community organizing; racial, class and gender justice and equity; and public policy. We are seeking a strategic, creative thinker who excels at building relationships of trust. Program Officers employ their relational, analytic, and organizational skills to support community engagement, program design, implementation, evaluation, and improvement. They work closely with communities, partner organizations, applicants, and grantees, employing exceptional interpersonal and cross-cultural skills and striving to mitigate the power imbalances inherent between a foundation and its stakeholders.

Qualifications

Understanding of and ability to effectively relate to people and groups who face disproportionate barriers to health care and health is critical to success in this role. We seek a candidate with nine years combined highly relevant paid or unpaid experience and/or education post high school. Relevant fields include, but are not limited to: community organizing, public policy, racial/class/gender justice and equity, public health or health care, and community development. Prior experience with nonprofit organizations or philanthropy can be helpful.

Salary & Benefits

The MeHAF office is located in Augusta and all employees are expected to live in Maine. We work in a hybrid mode, with staff generally in our Augusta office on Mondays and Tuesdays and flexibility to work in the office or remotely for the rest of the week. This allows an individual who enjoys and embraces a mix of working collaboratively with others as part of a team and engaging in self-directed, independent work to thrive. We offer a robust benefits package including health, dental, and life and disability insurance as well as employer-sponsored 401(k) retirement account with up to 7% employer contribution. The starting salary range for a new Program Officer is approximately $69,000 - $77,000, depending on experience.
