Job summary

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is seeking a Program Officer to manage a portfolio focused on health care system resilience and public health preparedness. The role involves coordinating multidisciplinary experts, developing written products, and engaging with federal sponsors to inform policy and practice.

Hybrid work arrangement with anticipated onsite duties in Washington, DC, and periodic travel as needed.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in public health, health policy, health sciences, public administration, or related field.
• Experience managing scientific, technical, health policy, or public health projects.
• Experience conducting research, synthesizing literature, and preparing written materials.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, competing priorities, and deadlines.
• Experience engaging experts and stakeholders from different disciplines.
• Strong organizational, analytical, written communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment and work with limited supervision.

Responsibilities

• Lead planning, coordination, and implementation of projects under the Standing Committee on Emerging Infectious Diseases and 21st Century Health Threats.
• Develop and manage project work plans, timelines, budgets, deliverables, and internal review processes.
• Coordinate multiple concurrent projects with leadership, authors, consultants, and staff.
• Develop project prospectuses, scopes of work, agendas, and background materials.
• Identify risks and resolve issues affecting schedules, resources, or deliverables.
• Provide day-to-day direction and coordination for project staff.
• Conduct and oversee targeted research, literature reviews, and evidence synthesis on topics related to infectious diseases, emergencies, and health care delivery.
• Support rapid expert consultations and written products, including background materials and reviews.
• Engage multidisciplinary experts to ensure diverse perspectives are included.
• Support dissemination of findings via briefings, webinars, and presentations.
• Support standing committee management, planning meetings, and engagement of experts.
• Coordinate sponsor communications, particularly with ASPR, and translate sponsor priorities into scoped National Academies activities.
• Prepare materials for sponsor meetings, updates, and future work discussions.
• Collaborate with other boards, programs, and divisions to identify expertise and avoid duplication.
• Represent projects in meetings with external partners.
• Contribute to broader preparedness and rapid-response portfolio activities and cross-divisional initiatives.
