Job description

The New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) invests in community-based organizations and programs to combat poverty and foster community growth. Its Comprehensive Afterschool System of NYC (COMPASS), formerly known as the Out-of-School Time Program, comprises over 900 programs serving K-12 students. These programs offer a mix of academics, recreation, enrichment, and cultural activities to develop 21st-century skills. Funded through a competitive RFP process, COMPASS aims to serve over 95,000 youth, supporting afterschool, holiday, and summer services.

Duties

Under the supervision of a COMPASS Deputy Director, the Community Coordinator will monitor 20 sites and perform the following duties:

  1. Monitor and evaluate Community-Based Organization (CBO) COMPASS contractors.
  2. Review and approve program plans and budgets.
  3. Conduct site visits during late afternoon and early evening hours.
  4. Provide technical assistance and guide work improvements or corrective actions for underperforming CBO contractors.
  5. Participate in contract negotiations.
  6. Share resources and provide technical assistance to promote program quality at COMPASS sites.
  7. Assist contractors with contract development, modifications, and amendments.
  8. Evaluate contract performance reports and fiscal documents to ensure compliance.
  9. Train CBOs on DYCD Online, the web-based program management system.
  10. Prepare summary reports and recommendations for higher management.
  11. Generate standard reports as required.
  12. Support additional projects and tasks as needed within the COMPASS unit.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of community work experience related to the duties above; or
  • High school diploma or equivalent and six years of relevant community work experience; or
  • Equivalent education and experience, with at least one year of experience as described above.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience working with community-based organizations.
  • Knowledge of afterschool or youth development programming.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Familiarity with DYCD’s data system, DYCD Online experience preferred.
Residency Requirement

NYC residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. City employees with two continuous years of service may reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. Confirm eligibility during the interview.
