Job summary

4-H Camp Overlook is seeking a Program Area Leader to guide campers through engaging activities in various program areas such as Arts & Crafts and Shooting Sports. Applicants should be enthusiastic about youth development and able to work flexible hours throughout the camp season. This position requires supervising campers and coordinating program activities, all aimed at fostering a fun and safe camp environment.

Qualifications

Job description

This position will serve as a Program Area Leader for a specialty program area (such as Arts & Crafts, Nature-Outdoors-Learning & Science (NOLS), Shooting Sports, Teamwork & Recreational Sports, High Adventure, Waterfront) for 4-H Camp Overlook, an overnight summer camp owned and operated by Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Franklin and St. Lawrence County, located in Mountain View, New York. The primary responsibility of this position is to further the mission of camp through the development and delivery of 4-H programming that is safe, fun and appropriate to the campers’ ages and abilities. Job duties will include, but not be limited to: assisting with weekly program design, implementing afternoon and evening programs and activities, assisting in daily operations of 4-H Camp Overlook as directed; and supervising 4-H campers and counseling staff. This position accepts and performs all position duties outlined in this position description, and performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned and deemed appropriate by the 4-H Camp Overlook Director. (NOTE: This position does not include primary cabin responsibilities but may assist as necessary).

POSITION DETAILS:

This position is a full-time exempt position, Sunday through Friday. The rate for this position is $375 to $450 per week commensurate on experience.

POSITION INFORMATION:

Required Qualifications:

Must be at least 18 years of age and must meet the minimum age requirement for particular program area to comply with NYS Department of Health regulations.
Must have subject matter background and experience in the assigned area that this position will be coordinating.
Willingness and ability to take any required trainings for the position (example: the archery coordinator would need to take the NYS 4-H Shooting Sports training). These trainings would likely be prior to camp starting and may require travel to another area of the state.
Ability to relate to youth and adults in a positive manner.
Willingness to learn and understand the development needs of youth of all ages.
Desire, ability and willingness to work and live in a camp community and to reside at 4-H Camp Overlook, Mountain View, NY (including overnights) the entire time 4-H Camp is in session.
Ability to work flexible hours which will include evenings and weekends, as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications:

Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certifications (will train if necessary).
Supervising or leadership experience.
Previous camp staff experience; this could include a mixture of being a camper, participating in a counselor in training program at a youth camp, and/or previous work experience at a camp.
Demonstrated ability and desire to work with children and young adults indoors and outdoors.
Demonstrated ability to relate to one’s peer group.
Demonstrated ability to accept guidance and supervision.
Demonstrated ability to teach skills to other staff members and campers of all ages.

Good character, integrity and adaptability.
Experience working with youth of all ages.
Position Responsibilities:

Job Duties - 95%

1. Develop and deliver 4-H programs within the program area that is appropriate for the age and ability of the campers.

Write lesson plans using 4-H curriculum that meet camp outcomes and the abilities of the campers.
Evaluate abilities of campers and staff.
Deliver progressive activities.
Evaluate the success of the program area.

2. Ensure that campers and staff know and follow safety and educational procedures.

Assist in the implementation of staff training as it relates to the program area.
Train other staff in their responsibilities within the program area.
Ensure campers and staff follow safety procedures.
Enforce all camp health and safety standards, keeping campers safe at all times.

3. Assist in the direction, supervision and organization of campers in the cabin, within activities, and throughout camp in order to meet the intended camper outcomes.

Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement and empowerment of youth.
Ensure campers are properly supervised at all times: during meals, free times, class times, transition times, and all-camp activities.
Be aware of and implement safety guidelines.

4. Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.

Provide the daily care of each camper within your supervision including recognition of personal health needs.
Ensure that campers receive their medications as directed by the camp nurse.
Be alert to campers and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems and discuss with the camp nurse and/or camp director when appropriate.

Monitor the condition of equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance is adhered to; report repairs needed promptly to the camp director.

5. Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.

Represent 4-H Camp Overlook in initial contact with parents and campers on opening day of every session, making every effort to make campers and parents feel comfortable and welcome.
Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
Set a good example to campers and others in regard to general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule and sportsmanship.
Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned.

6. Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment for the archery program.

Maintain the equipment within the program area.
Ensure the security of the potentially unsafe equipment by keeping items put away and enforcing off-limit areas with campers.
Conduct daily check of area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
Clean program area daily, keeping it free of hazards and debris.
7. Supervise counselor staff within program area.

8. Assist leadership team in the coordination and planning of camper activities and classes, including afternoon, special programs, evening and weekend activities.

9. Assist campers in following the daily camp schedule.

10. Monitor progress of classes, and maintain records on all instructional classes, including lesson plans.

11. Assist in the evaluation of the current camping season, and make suggestions for the next camping season.

12. Perform other duties as assigned and/or reassigned as directed/required by the Camp Director.

Professional Improvement and Other Duties as Assigned - 5%

Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff, general marketing of Extension programs and other duties as assigned.
