Job summary

BRCC is seeking a part-time Peer Mentor for the Program for Successful Employment (PSE) and BEARS Comprehensive Transition Program (CTP) to assist students with cognitive and developmental disabilities in academics, campus life, and independence.

Mentors work under program staff guidance, supporting students through coursework, campus activities, and daily responsibilities to foster inclusion and success at BRCC.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students with note-taking, assignments, organization, and understanding course expectations.
  • Support students in navigating campus resources, schedules, and daily responsibilities.
  • Encourage participation in campus activities, social events, and student engagement opportunities.
  • Model appropriate academic, social, and workplace behaviors.
  • Communicate with program staff regarding student progress, concerns, and support needs.

Program for Successful Employment Peer Mentor

The Peer Mentor for the Program for Successful Employment (PSE) and BEARS Comprehensive Transition Program (CTP) provides part-time academic, social, and campus integration support to students with cognitive and developmental disabilities. This position assists students with navigating coursework, participating in campus life, and developing independence. Peer Mentors support inclusive postsecondary experiences under the guidance of program staff. This position is reserved for a student who is currently enrolled in and attending an accredited college or university.

Key Responsibilities

25%

  • Accompany students to classes, campus activities, and program-related events to support engagement and participation.

20%

  • Assist students with note-taking, assignments, organization, and understanding course expectations.

15%

  • Support students in navigating campus resources, schedules, and daily responsibilities.

  • Encourage participation in campus activities, social events, and student engagement opportunities.

10%

  • Model appropriate academic, social, and workplace behaviors.

  • Communicate with program staff regarding student progress, concerns, and support needs.
  • 5% Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Open to all fields of study; preference may be given to students in Education, Psychology, Social Work, Human Services, Rehabilitation Services, or a related field with an interest in supporting individuals with disabilities.

Experience

  • Experience working with diverse populations or individuals with disabilities preferred.
  • Experience in tutoring, mentoring, or peer support is a plus

Experience Substitution:

  • A combination of relevant education, professional training, and directly related experience may be substituted for the required education and experience, provided the applicant demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

Basic

  • Familiarity with college coursework expectations

Preferred Education

  • Current college student in Education, Psychology, Social Work, Rehabilitation Counseling or related field

Preferred Experience

  • Experience supporting students in academic or campus environments
  • Experience in leadership roles, mentoring, or student organizations
  • Additional Preferred Qualification:
  • Preference may be given to students with an Industry-Based Credential (IBC) in customer service, workforce development, or related areas
  • that support communication, professionalism, and workplace readiness.

  • Knowledge of basic academic support strategies such as note-taking, organization, and time management
  • Ability to model positive academic, social, and workplace behaviors
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills when working with diverse student populations

  • Basic understanding of professionalism, customer service, and workplace expectations
  • Ability to encourage independence while providing appropriate levels of support

  • Ability to follow guidance from program staff and implement support strategies consistently
