At Hearts & Hammers, we believe everyone deserves to live safely and independently in the home they love. Since 1991, we have mobilized volunteers, corporate partners, and community organizations to provide exterior home repairs for qualifying Seniors, Disabled Individuals, and Veterans at no cost to the homeowner.
Hearts & Hammers serves communities in Minnesota and Dallas/Fort Worth, completing more than 100 volunteer-driven home improvement projects each year and engaging thousands of volunteers in meaningful service.
Position Overview
The Program Director is responsible for leading the planning, coordination, and execution of Hearts & Hammers' volunteer-driven home repair Program Days. This position serves as the primary manager of Program Day projects, ensuring that homeowners, volunteers, sponsors, and community partners receive exceptional support throughout the process.
The Program Director oversees project logistics from sponsor registration through project completion, manages sponsor and volunteer relationships, coordinates homeowner assignments, supervises field operations staff, and maintains a pipeline of project-ready homes to support annual production goals.
The successful candidate will be highly organized, relationship-focused, and passionate about helping Seniors, Disabled Individuals, and Veterans remain safely, independently, and with dignity in the homes they love.
Key Responsibilities:
Program Planning & Delivery
- Manage all aspects of Program Day project delivery from sponsor registration through project completion.
- Coordinate homeowner assignments, project schedules, volunteer teams, and project timelines.
- Attend homeowner scope meetings and support Team Captains in developing project plans and material needs.
- Ensure projects are prepared, supplied, and ready for successful completion.
- Provide onsite leadership and support during Program Days.
- Troubleshoot project issues and ensure safe, efficient project execution.
- Ensure projects are delivered in a manner that reflects Hearts & Hammers' commitment to dignity, respect, safety, and homeowner participation.
- Collaborate with the Administrative Program Coordinator and Facilities & Program Support Specialist to maintain a year-round pipeline of qualified homeowners.
- Coordinate technical inspections, project development, prioritization, and scheduling.
- Review inspection findings and determine project suitability, scope, and readiness for Program Day assignment.
- Assign homeowners to volunteer groups and Program Days well in advance of scheduled project dates.
- Maintain a forward-looking inventory of project-ready homes to support sponsor commitments and annual production goals.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director to identify priority service areas and conduct targeted outreach to build a pipeline of qualified homeowner projects that aligns with grant requirements, sponsor commitments, and organizational priorities.
- Manage sponsor relationships and serve as the primary Program Day contact following sponsorship commitment.
- Support Team Captains throughout the planning and project execution process.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with corporate sponsors, volunteer groups, community organizations, contractors, and community partners.
- Represent Hearts & Hammers at sponsor meetings, volunteer activities, community events, and partner engagements as needed to support program delivery and organizational growth.
- Assist with recruitment of new volunteer groups, sponsors, and community partnerships.
Administration & Organizational Support
- Supervise the Facilities & Program Support Specialist.
- Coordinate warehouse operations, project preparation activities, and volunteer support projects in partnership with and through the Facilities & Program Support Specialist.
- Ensure tools, materials, trailers, and equipment are available and ready for Program Days.
- Maintain accurate program records, project data, and outcome reporting.
- Assist with grant reporting and documentation requirements.
- Collect homeowner stories, testimonials, photographs, and project outcomes for organizational communications and impact reporting.
- Support fundraising activities, strategic initiatives, and organizational events.
- Prepare reports and updates for the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience.
- Experience managing events, projects, volunteers, community programs, construction projects, or nonprofit operations.
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to build relationships with homeowners, volunteers, sponsors, and community partners.
- Comfortable working independently and managing multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Experience supervising staff, volunteers, or project teams.
- Proficiency with Google Suite and database/CRM systems.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel locally.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in nonprofit organizations.
- Experience in residential construction, facilities management, property maintenance, or related fields.
- Grant reporting or program evaluation experience.

Work Schedule
This position generally follows a weekday schedule; however, occasional evening and weekend work is required to support Program Days, volunteer activities, and special events. Flexible scheduling and compensatory time off are provided when operationally appropriate.
