Job description

The Program Director/Instructor for Medical Sonography is a full-time faculty member responsible for providing leadership for the Medical Sonography Program while teaching didactic, laboratory, and clinical courses. As the founding Program Director, this position provides leadership in developing the Medical Sonography Program from inception through and beyond initial accreditation and enrollment of the inaugural cohort.

Responsibilities include program planning, curriculum development, student success, accreditation, clinical education, faculty coordination, laboratory oversight, and continuous quality improvement. The Program Director serves as the primary liaison with clinical affiliates and accrediting agencies and ensures compliance with Bladen Community College policies and the standards of the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS), Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), and Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide leadership for planning, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Medical Sonography Program.
  • Lead development of the new program through initial accreditation and continuing accreditation processes.
  • Ensure the program continuously meets current CAAHEP/JRC-DMS Standards and Guidelines.
  • Develop, implement, evaluate, and revise curriculum, student learning outcomes, and program outcomes.
  • Develop and maintain program, laboratory, and clinical policies and procedures.
  • Recruit, orient, mentor, supervise, and evaluate faculty and clinical instructors.
  • Coordinate laboratory operations including equipment selection, purchasing, maintenance, quality assurance, and inventory.
  • Develop and maintain clinical affiliation agreements and coordinate student clinical placements.
  • Evaluate clinical sites and maintain strong partnerships with healthcare providers.
  • Monitor student progression, retention, credentialing success, graduate placement, and employer satisfaction.
  • Develop and maintain an active program advisory committee.
  • Prepare annual reports and maintain documentation required by the college and accrediting agencies.
  • Prepare and monitor the annual program budget and recommend personnel, facilities, equipment, and technology needs.
  • Participate in grant development, recruitment activities, curriculum review, college committees, professional development, and community outreach.
  • Teach didactic, laboratory, simulation, and clinical courses within assigned faculty workload.
  • Maintain office hours, advise students, and provide academic support.
  • Develop course syllabi, instructional materials, examinations, and laboratory learning activities.
  • Evaluate student performance using formative and summative assessment methods.
  • Promote active, evidence-based teaching strategies and effective use of instructional technology.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides supervision and direction to faculty, clinical instructors, laboratory personnel, and other assigned staff supporting the Medical Sonography Program. Must demonstrate current knowledge of diagnostic medical sonography, higher education, curriculum development, assessment, accreditation, instructional methodology, and healthcare workforce needs. Must possess strong leadership, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Required
  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Current American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) credential(s) for one or more of the concentrations offered.
  • Minimum of two years of full-time clinical experience as a registered sonographer.
  • Minimum of two years of teaching, supervisory, or educational administration experience.
  • Documented experience in supervision, instruction, evaluation, student guidance, and in educational theories and techniques.
  • Must continually meet the current qualifications for Program Director established by the CAAHEP Standards and Guidelines for Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
Preferred
  • Master's degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Health Sciences, Education, or related field.
  • Multiple ARDMS specialty credentials.
  • Community college teaching experience.
  • Experience obtaining and maintaining CAAHEP accreditation.
  • Experience developing new educational programs and clinical partnerships.
LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to interpret accreditation standards, regulations, and College policies; prepare reports; analyze outcomes data; and communicate effectively with students, faculty, administrators, clinical partners, accrediting agencies, and the public. Ability to speak Spanish is preferred

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Current ARDMS credential(s). Current Basic Life Support certification. Must meet all clinical agency requirements, including immunizations, drug screening, and criminal background checks.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Frequently required to stand, walk, bend, reach, lift up to 25 pounds, demonstrate scanning techniques, and operate ultrasound equipment in classroom, laboratory, simulation, and clinical environments.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in classrooms, laboratories, simulation facilities, offices, and affiliated healthcare organizations. Evening and weekend assignments and occasional travel are required.
