Job summary

Grow Good Hawai‘i is seeking a part-time Program Coordinator to support the implementation of the Trees for People initiative in Wai‘anae and Waimnalo. The role reports to the Program Director and covers distribution logistics, outreach, project coordination, evaluation, and reporting, with occasional events, communications, and purchasing support.

This position is 50% FTE and hybrid. The project is grant-funded with a five-year horizon, aiming to plant 2,000 trees and strengthen community

Job description

Grow Good Hawai‘i is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to restore nature and strengthen Hawaii's food security through community-driven, agroecological solutions in urban settings. We are seeking a part-time Program Coordinator to support the implementation of “Trees for People: Growing an Urban Community Food & Native Forest,” a significant initiative funded by a $5 million grant from the Urban & Community Forestry Program of the USDA Forest Service. Over five years, the project aims to distribute 2,000 trees and facilitate a variety of programs for education, support, and community building, establishing or reinforcing networks of backyard growers in Wai‘anae and Waimnalo, and promoting residential-scale agroforestry.

Grow Good Hawai‘i focuses on urban—human-inhabited—areas because we believe in community empowerment, and because these areas can connect upland nature with coastal ecosystems and the ocean. As Program Coordinator, you will help restore this “missing link” and bring nature and abundance back from mauka to makai.
Role
The Program Coordinator will report to the Program Director, helping to manage day-to-day distribution logistics and outreach, project coordination, and evaluation and reporting, along with occasional support for event coordination, communications, and purchasing. This is a 50% FTE (part-time), hybrid position.

Responsibilities

Regular Tasks

Distribution Planning & Outreach

• Schedule distribution visits and coordinate with participants on planting or pick-up logistics
• Support community outreach and recruitment for the program
• Coordinate with nursery staff to confirm availability, scheduling, and materials (trees, supplies) needed to meet resident requests

Project Coordination

• Coordinate meetings, including scheduling, agendas, and follow-up
• Serve as logistical coordinator with project partners

Evaluation & Reporting

• Support USDA Forest Service grant reporting requirements

Occasional Tasks:

Event Coordination

• Plan logistics for upcoming events
• Recruit and communicate with event participants
• Coordinate volunteers and partners
• Facilitate events on-site
• Prepare post-event reporting and follow-up

Communications

• Produce newsletter (bi-annually, or more frequently as needed)
• Maintain and update the website
• Manage social media

Purchasing & Procurement

• Plan and place periodic plant orders
• Procure supplies such as compost and materials
• Manage vendor communication and follow up on outstanding orders

Qualifications: Experience, Technical Skills & Aptitudes

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Capable of managing distribution logistics and partner communication — strong time management and prioritization skills are essential
• Proficiency with project management, scheduling, and database tools; general IT literacy
• Comfort with purchasing and basic vendor/financial coordination
• Experience with newsletter, website, or social media platforms a plus
• Experience in horticulture, community food systems, project coordination, nonprofit administration, or a related field preferred but not mandatory

• Self-motivated, service-oriented, and able to work independently
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work with people from diverse communities
• Commitment to community improvement, environmental justice, and food security

Conditions of Employment

• 50% FTE (part-time), hybrid position, with regular communication via phone, Zoom, and occasional in-person meetings, events, and site visits
• Gross salary of $2,000–$2,500 per month (half-time position), commensurate with experience

• Start date as early as mid-November 2026
• Grant-funded position, tied to the five-year Trees for People project (currently in year 3)
