Job description

Position Summary

The Program Coordinator serves as a vital liaison between Kilgore College and Christus Health System in the implementation of the KC/Christus Nursing Apprenticeship (Nursing WORKS – Workforce-Oriented Readiness, Knowledge, and Structure). This innovative initiative integrates paid, work-based clinical experiences with academic requirements to prepare nursing students as safe, competent, workforce-ready graduates. The coordinator will work onsite at Christus facilities while also serving as Kilgore College nursing faculty, ensuring seamless alignment between academic and clinical objectives. The role involves direct oversight of student apprentices and nursing preceptors, support for preceptors, coordination of clinical scheduling, and continuous collaboration with academic and hospital leadership.

Position Responsibilities
Program Implementation & Oversight
  • Coordinate and oversee the daily operations of the Nursing Apprenticeship program at clinical sites.
  • Serve as the primary on‑site resource for students during paid clinical rotations, providing guidance, coaching, and immediate problem resolution.
  • Serve as the primary on‑site resource for hospital nursing preceptors.
  • Ensure program implementation complies with Texas Board of Nursing Guideline 3.7.43 and Kilgore College/Christus MOU agreements.
  • Monitor student progress, clinical hour tracking, and competency achievement through approved evaluation systems.
Academic–Practice Collaboration
  • Work in tandem with the Director of Nursing to align academic coursework with clinical practice requirements.
  • Collaborate with faculty to revise curriculum, integrate applied clinical learning, and maintain high academic standards.
  • Facilitate effective communication between hospital preceptors, KC faculty/staff, and Christus clinical leadership.
  • Support preceptor development by assisting in training sessions, mentorship, and evaluation processes.
  • Complete clinical grading each shift per apprentice.
  • Completed end‑of‑semester clinical evaluations for each apprentice.
Student & Preceptor Support
  • Provide weekly evaluations of student performance in partnership with preceptors.
  • Serve as a liaison to ensure students receive timely compensation for clinical hours.
  • Address student concerns related to work‑life balance, clinical placement, or competency development.
  • Support preceptors in applying adult learning principles, coaching strategies, and competency assessments.
Program Monitoring & Evaluation
  • Collect, track, and report program outcomes, including retention, graduation, NCLEX pass rates, and employer satisfaction.
  • Contribute to program evaluation activities, stakeholder meetings, and reporting to grant funders.
  • Assist in identifying barriers to implementation and recommend strategies for continuous improvement.

Minimum Position Requirements

Required:

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN).
  • Unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in Texas.
  • Minimum of 3 years clinical nursing experience in an acute care setting.
  • Experience in nursing education (clinical instruction, preceptorship, or faculty role).
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships across academic and clinical environments.
Preferred
  • Knowledge of Texas Board of Nursing regulations related to clinical education.
  • Experience with curriculum development and program evaluation.
  • Familiarity with digital clinical tracking systems (e.g., ATI program manager or similar).

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office and classroom environment.
  • No or very limited physical effort required; however, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.
