Job summary

The Salvation Army USA Central Territory is seeking a Program Cook to plan, prepare and serve meals for Salvation Army programs, while maintaining a safe, clean kitchen and managing the budget for your area.

You will follow ServSafe standards, work with volunteers, and report needs to leadership. The role requires English communication, basic computer skills, and knowledge of kitchen equipment; a high school diploma and background check are required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is required or preferred.
• Kitchen experience is preferred.
• Must have valid driver’s license and complete Safe From Harm within 30 days; ServSafe within 30 days; ServSafe Manager course within 90 days.

Responsibilities

• Plan, prepare, and serve meals at scheduled times following ServSafe standards.
• Maintain a budget for the assigned area with leadership support.
• Set monthly menus and ensure ingredients are available for meal prep.
• Receive, verify, and store food deliveries properly.
• Wear required food service attire and PPE at all times.
• Communicate kitchen needs and inventory to leadership.
• Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
• Create a Monthly Menu for programs.
• Foster a positive, collaborative kitchen environment for staff and volunteers.
• Perform other tasks as assigned by leadership.

Job Description:

As the Program Cook you will plan, prepare, and serve meals for Salvation Army programs while maintaining a safe and clean environment. Maintain the budget for assigned areas while ensuring that the Mission of The Salvation Army is effectively carried out.

What You Will Do:

• Plan, prepare, and serve meals at scheduled times in accordance with ServSafe standards.
• Maintain a budget for your assigned area working with the Corps Officer.
• Set monthly menus and ensure ingredients are available for meal preparation.
• Receive, verify, and properly store food deliveries.
• Wear required food service attire and personal protective equipment at all times.
• Communicate kitchen needs, concerns, and inventory requirements to leadership.
• Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
• Create a Monthly Menu for programs.
• Foster a positive and collaborative environment in the kitchen for employees and volunteers.
• Other tasks as assigned by leadership.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent Preferred.

Background Checks: Position requires a background check to be completed, and all background check results will be reviewed.

Experience: Kitchen Experience Preferred.

Certifications: Must have a valid driver's license and maintain The Salvation Army Driver's qualification standard; must complete Safe From Harm training within the first 30 days of employment. ServSafe Food handler within 30 days of employment, and successful completion of ServSafe Mangers course within 90 days of employment.

Skills/Abilities:

• Able to speak, write and understand English in a manner sufficient for effective communication with leadership, field personnel, and clientele.
• Computer proficiency with Microsoft products and ability to learn electronic reporting systems.
• Must demonstrate knowledge and competency in using industrial and typical Kitchen equipment and supplies (i.e., dishwashing machine, garbage disposal, 3-compartment sink, mop, bucket, broom, dustpan, trash bags, cleaning supplies, towels, apron, hair net, gloves, etc.).

Supervisory Responsibility: None.

Physical Requirements:

• Good speaking, hearing and vision ability, and excellent manual dexterity.
• Lifting, pulling, and pushing of materials up to 25 pounds.
• May require bending, squatting, walking.
• May require standing for extended periods.

Travel: Local Travel is expected.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in a Kitchen and/or office environment; Working conditions may include occasional exposure to chemicals and dust. Standard safety precautions needed...may require some weekend and evening work.
