Job summary

CitySquash seeks a full-time Assistant Academic Director to start in Summer 2026. The Academic Coordinator supports the Elementary and Middle School Academic Directors in academic session facilitation and student progress tracking.

CitySquash is a Bronx nonprofit offering squash, tutoring, mentoring, and college prep; the role involves leading sessions, communicating with families, tracking data, coordinating field trips, and assisting with recruitment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Experience teaching/working with at-risk youth for at least one year after college preferred.
  • Knowledge of Spanish (proficiency/fluency highly preferred).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Driver's license required (comfortable driving a 15-passenger van).
  • Energetic, upbeat, and enthusiastic about CitySquash mission.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and/or assist daily academic sessions and implement curricula for select elementary and middle school sessions under the guidance of Academic Directors.
  • Meet and communicate with students and families regularly regarding schedule, engagement, and behavioral issues.
  • Support in collecting, recording, and monitoring changes of student data (attendance, grades, assessments).
  • Research opportunities for community service and field trips; chaperone/lead cultural outings and trips, including overnight travel.
  • Assist in tryout data collection and community outreach for recruitment efforts, co-leading tryout activities.

Program Description

CitySquash ( www.citysquash.org ) is a nonprofit youth program based in the Bronx. The organization helps motivated and talented young people from economically disadvantaged households to fulfill their academic, athletic, and personal potential. Founded in 2002, CitySquash currently serves 200 elementary, middle, high school, and college students. For our participants, CitySquash is an intensive, multi day-a-week commitment that lasts up to 14 years and includes squash, tutoring, mentoring, community service, travel, culture, nutrition, high school placement, employment training and college prep. Over 130 CitySquash students have won scholarships to selective prep schools and colleges, including Avon Old Farms, Berkshire, Blair, Brooks, Canterbury, Eaglebrook, Episcopal, Hackley, Lawrenceville, Loomis Chaffee, Mercersburg, Millbrook, St. George’s, St. Paul's, Taft, Trinity-Pawling, Westover, Bates, Bowdoin, Columbia, Connecticut College, Cornell, CUNY, Franklin & Marshall, Hamilton, Hobart, Middlebury, Mt. Holyoke, St. Lawrence, Trinity, Vassar and Wesleyan.

CitySquash recently opened the Julian H. Robertson Jr. CitySquash Center, a brand-new squash and academic facility in November 2025.

Primary Roles and Responsibilities
  • Lead and/or assist daily academic sessions and implement curricula for select elementary and middle school sessions under the guidance of Academic Directors.
  • Meet and communicate with students and families regularly regarding schedule, engagement, and behavioral issues that arise at CitySquash and in school.
  • Support the Elementary and Middle School Academic Directors in collecting, recording, and monitoring changes of student data, including attendance, school grades, academic assessments, etc.
  • Research opportunities for community service and field trips for team members and, in coordination with Academic Directors, chaperone and/or lead cultural outings, community service trips, tournaments, and other trips, including overnight travel.
  • Assist in tryout data collection and community outreach for ongoing recruitment efforts, as well as co-leading tryout activities.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Experience teaching and/or working with children, especially at-risk youth, for at least one year after college is highly preferable
  • Knowledge of Spanish (with proficiency or fluency highly preferred)

Schedule

During the school year (Sept – mid-June), CitySquash programming typically ends around 7:00pm Monday through Friday. Academic Coordinators are also expected to work up to 12 weekend days during the school year (for community service and culture projects, and overnight team trips). During the summer (mid-June – mid-Aug), CitySquash programming ends by 5pm. There is no weekend work when school is not in session from mid-June through August.

Vacation
  • 30 days of vacation annually (with some restrictions).
  • Some but not all national holidays are off.
Compensation
  • $45,000-$60,000 DOE.
  • Full health insurance coverage.
