The Department of Architecture at the Stuart Weitzman School of Design, University of Pennsylvania, seeks a distinguished practitioner who is actively engaged to join our faculty as a Professor (or an Associate Professor) of Practice in Architecture. Practice ranks are reserved for distinguished professionals who wish to combine education with practice. They bring their understanding of practice to the school and may use their teaching as a way of exploring new ideas and theories.

The ideal candidate should demonstrate:

  • Extensive Studio Teaching Experience: A robust history of teaching design studios, integrating both theoretical and practical aspects of architecture.
  • Global Reputation: An internationally recognized reputation in design, supported by award-winning projects and significant contributions to the field.
  • Strong Design Practice: An established design practice with a demonstrated record of innovative work and critical acclaim.
  • Dedication to Teaching: A deep commitment to nurturing students and contributing to their professional development through mentorship and engaged teaching.
  • International Connections: Strong ties to the global design community, facilitating opportunities for collaboration and enhancing the department's international profile.

  • Practice ranks are for distinguished professionals who wish to combine education and practice, exploring new ideas and theories. The exact title/rank will be determined based on prior experience. This position is an appointment for a three- to five-year term, is benefit-eligible, and it can be renewed. It is not tenure-track or tenure-eligible. Teaching requirements may vary from half-time (usually one semester-long design studio per year) to a maximum of three-fourths time. Practice faculty are expected to participate in departmental events, reviews, symposia, and other programs at the Weitzman School of Design.

The Weitzman School prepares students to address complex sociocultural and environmental issues through thoughtful inquiry, creative expression, and innovation. As a diverse community of scholars and practitioners, we are committed to advancing the public good-both locally and globally-through art, design, planning, and preservation.

The preferred candidate should have a national or international reputation in the profession of architecture, including significant built works in the urban public realm. Candidates should have some graduate-level teaching experience and a commitment to collaborative studio and workshop-based educational models. We seek candidates who demonstrate a commitment to advancing the profession of architecture. Those who seek to advance the design of equitable public space through their professional work are particularly encouraged to apply.

Candidates must hold a professional license in architecture. A professionally accredited master's degree in architecture is preferred. Preference will be given to individuals with a distinguished record of professional design work that is recognized by their peers as a significant contribution to the discipline.
