Organizational Unit Overview

Join the Pirate Nation! The Department of Engineering offers an ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science in Engineering built around a multidisciplinary core with concentrations in biochemical, biomedical, electrical, civil and environmental, industrial and systems, and mechanical engineering. The department includes approximately 28 faculty members serving over 400 students. Faculty teaching and scholarship spans health care, energy, advanced manufacturing, environmental systems, engineering education, and other areas of societal importance. ECU Engineering is distinguished by its student-centered, hands‑on approach: small classes and laboratories are taught by faculty, design experiences begin in the first year, and the curriculum culminates in a two-semester capstone project addressing a real‑world challenge for an industry or campus partner. Established in 2004 in response to regional workforce needs, the department maintains strong connections with employers and university partners, including ECU's health sciences programs, while preparing versatile engineers to contribute across disciplines and industries. The Department of Engineering plays a central role in ECU's Eastern Region Pharma Center (https://pharma.ecu.edu/), where specialized coursework, advanced biomanufacturing facilities, and industry‑informed experiences prepare students across engineering concentrations for careers in pharmaceutical manufacturing and the life-sciences sector.

The College of Engineering and Technology (CET; https://cet.ecu.edu/) combines experiential education, applied research, and industry engagement to support faculty scholarship and student success. The college serves approximately 3,400 students and includes over 90 faculty across four departments - Computer Science, Construction Management, Engineering, and Technology Systems - that complement one another through shared academic strengths. CET serves as an engine for innovation and economic growth in eastern North Carolina, with impact in health, advanced manufacturing, critical infrastructure, and energy through applied research, industry partnerships, and initiatives such as the Center for Sustainable Energy and Environmental Engineering (CSE3). CET offers a collaborative and collegial environment that values mentorship and excellence in teaching and scholarship, while providing faculty opportunities to contribute to workforce development and regional impact.

East Carolina University (ECU; https://www.ecu.edu/) is a Carnegie R1 doctoral institution within the 17-campus University of North Carolina System, dedicated to student success, public service, and regional transformation.
