Qualifications

  • Terminal degree in architecture or a related field.

  • Two years of related work experience or post-secondary teaching experience with demonstrated architectural design ability.
  • Experience engaging contemporary architectural technologies, methods, or modes of practice.
  • Ability to translate professional expertise into architectural education.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and prepare for teaching and maintain an active classroom.

Job description

As an architecture professor, you'll prepare students for evolving careers in a highly creative, rapidly changing profession. As part of a team of accomplished professors, you’ll teach students to integrate architectural design thinking with technology, professional practice, and emerging approaches, while engaging with the environmental, social, technical, and cultural forces that shape the built environment. At SCAD, you’ll contribute to a growing architecture program through teaching, mentorship, curriculum development, interdisciplinary collaboration, and ongoing engagement with the evolving nature of architectural practice.

Throughout each quarter, you’ll encourage interdisciplinary thinking and collaboration across related creative and technical fields. You’ll also mentor students on design, technical, and professional questions, emphasizing integration and critical thinking, and connect contemporary architectural practice and emerging technologies to course content.

To support the university’s mission of preparing talented students for creative professions through engaged teaching and learning in a positively oriented university environment, you’ll:

  • Conduct course- and program-level assessments
  • Model professionalism
  • Fulfill grading and academic documentation requirements
  • Record attendance
  • Follow academic policies and regulations and support academic assessment and institutional effectiveness efforts

As a professor, you’ll:

  • Plan and prepare for teaching
  • Maintain an active and engaged classroom environment
  • Facilitate syllabus design, submission, and approval
  • Hold office hours and midterm grade reviews to provide feedback to students
  • Provide students with extra help sessions, extended learning opportunities, and field trips

Additionally, you’ll attend on-ground and virtual events including:

  • Faculty councils
  • Admission events
  • Curriculum assessment and development
  • Institutional effectiveness and accreditation support
  • Exhibitions or other publicity assignments

Ideal candidates will demonstrate:

  • Strong architectural design judgment
  • An ability to connect knowledge to broader architectural thinking and to student learning
  • Professional experience in emerging technologies, artificial intelligence, sustainability, construction, building systems, computation, fabrication, digital workflows, or interdisciplinary practice
  • An ability to move fluidly between conceptual thinking and the technical realities of architectural practice

Minimum qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in architecture or a relevant field
  • Academic and professional credentials to teach in architecture
  • Two years of work experience in a related profession or post-secondary teaching experience and demonstrated architectural design ability and professional experience
  • Post-secondary teaching experience or demonstrated ability to translate professional expertise into architectural education
  • Experience engaging contemporary architectural technologies, methods, or modes of practice

Preferred qualifications:

  • Previous university-level teaching experience in architecture
  • Professional experience across multiple phases of architectural design and project delivery
  • Evidence of continued creative, professional, scholarly, or applied research activity
  • Ability to translate professional expertise into an active and engaging studio environment

Certificates, licenses, and registrations:

Professional architectural licensure or comparable credentials

Travel required:

  • Less than 10%
