Job summary

Vance Granville Community College seeks an Academic Success Center professional tutor to provide one-on-one and group tutoring, applying personalized strategies and study techniques to support student success.

The tutor will lead workshops, adapt to diverse learning needs, maintain records, and participate in ongoing professional development while upholding an inclusive, student-centered environment.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Associate in Arts or Associate in Science Degree.
  • Effective verbal and written communication.
  • Sensitive and respectful to economically and academically disadvantaged students.
  • Ability to establish trusting relationships with students and staff.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Creative problem-solving and decision-making abilities.

Job description

The Academic Success Center professional tutor reports to the Academic Success Center coordinator and is responsible for individual tutorial services, providing personalized academic success strategies and study techniques. He/she shall have demonstrated personal and professional competence for the responsibilities assigned.

  • Lead group and individual tutoring sessions and workshops.
  • Meet the learning needs of students using various learning styles.
  • Use active learning and effective study techniques to maximize student potential.
  • Use a variety of instructional techniques in tutoring sessions to meet students’ learning needs.
  • Maintain a positive, student-centered, and professional environment.
  • Develop and distribute resources for students, faculty, and staff use.
  • Follow and communicate Academic Success Center policies and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records of tutoring sessions.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance academic support skills.
  • Promote tutorial services during outreach activities and events.
  • Act as an academic success model
  • Show employ ability skills: adaptability, communication, information processing, problem-solving, responsibility, and teamwork. Multi-task, and adapt to changing procedures, protocols, or assignments
  • Respect diversity and promote an inclusive, culturally responsive environment
Education and Experience Required:
  • Minimum Associate in Arts or Associate in Science Degree.
  • Must be able to communicate constructively and effectively.
  • Must be sensitive, respectful, and understanding of the needs of economically and academically disadvantaged, ethnically diverse students.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain a trusting and productive working relationship with program students and staff.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Creative problem-solving, conflict resolution and decision-making skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
Education and Experience Preferred:
  • Bachelor’s degree from/at a regionally accredited post-secondary institution with documented successful completion of undergraduate coursework.
  • Bachelor Degree, previous experience providing learning support and/or instruction
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 30 lbs. occasionally.
  • Ability to work with computers. Walking, standing and stooping throughout the work day.
