Columbia College’s Stafford Learning Commons seeks a Professional Tutor to support students in STEM and/or writing. This role provides individualized and small-group tutoring, helping learners strengthen knowledge, study strategies, and confidence in an inclusive environment.

Job Summary

The Professional Tutor provides individualized and small-groupacademic support to Columbia College students in STEM disciplinesand/or writing. This position helps students strengthen subjectknowledge, develop effective academic strategies, and buildconfidence as independent learners. Working collaboratively withLearning Commons staff and faculty, the Professional Tutor providesaccessible, student-centered academic assistance in theirdesignated areas of expertise while maintaining a welcoming andinclusive learning environment.

Essential Functions
  • Academic Tutoring and Student Support
  • Provide individual and small-group tutoring in assigned STEMdisciplines and/or writing.
  • Assess student learning needs and adapt tutoring approaches tosupport individual learning styles and academic goals.
  • Explain complex concepts clearly while encouraging criticalthinking, problem-solving, and independent learning.
  • Assist students in developing effective study habits, timemanagement strategies, and academic confidence.
  • Support students in understanding course expectations,preparing for examinations, and applying academic concepts.
  • Maintain academic integrity by guiding students throughcoursework without completing assignments on their behalf.
  • Discipline-Specific Tutoring depending on qualifications andassigned responsibilities
  • Provide STEM tutoring in mathematics, science, and relateddisciplines, emphasizing conceptual understanding andproblem-solving strategies.
  • Support students throughout the writing process, includingbrainstorming, organization, thesis development, revision, andediting strategies.
  • Assist students with academic writing conventions, citationpractices, and appropriate use of research materials.
  • Help students develop transferable skills that support successacross courses and academic disciplines.
  • Collaboration and Student Engagement
  • Collaborate with faculty and Learning Commons staff to identifystudent learning needs and provide appropriate academicsupport.
  • Refer students to additional tutoring services, libraryresources, faculty, or campus support services as appropriate.
  • Foster a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive learningenvironment for students from diverse academic backgrounds.
  • Promote student engagement with Learning Commons academicsupport services.
Administrative and Professional Responsibilities
  • Maintain accurate tutoring records and appointmentdocumentation using designated scheduling software.
  • Communicate professionally and promptly with students and staffregarding appointments, scheduling, and academic supportneeds.
  • Participate in required tutor training, meetings, andprofessional development.
  • Maintain student confidentiality in accordance with FERPA andinstitutional policies.
  • Follow established Learning Commons procedures and ColumbiaCollege policies.
  • Assist with academic support initiatives and other relatedduties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Associate degree or equivalent college coursework in a STEMdiscipline, English, writing, education, or a closely relatedfield.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in at least one designated tutoringarea: STEM or writing.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solvingskills.
  • Ability to explain academic concepts clearly and adaptinstruction to individual student needs.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, reliability, and commitment tostudent success.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in anacademic environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant academicdiscipline.
  • Previous experience in tutoring, teaching, academic support, orrelated instruction.
  • Experience supporting college students, adult learners, orstudents from diverse academic backgrounds.
  • Experience providing academic writing assistance or tutoring inmathematics and science.
  • Familiarity with learning strategies and instructionalapproaches that support diverse learners.
  • Experience with online tutoring platforms and academicscheduling software.
Working Conditions

Work is performed in the Stafford Learning Commons, designatedcampus tutoring locations, or virtually as assigned. Scheduling isbased on student demand and institutional needs and may includeevening hours.

Ability to perform essential job duties in an academic environment,including using computers and instructional technology andcommunicating with students in person or virtually, with or withoutreasonable accommodation.

The work environment conditions describedhere are representative of those an employee encounters whileperforming the essential functions of this job. While performingthe duties of this job, the employee is rarely exposed to outsideweather conditions; however, possible exposure to hazards andphysical risks to personal safety may occur while operating certainequipment. The noise level in the work environment is usuallymild.
