UPMC Hillman Cancer Center provides world-class cancer care, right here in Harrisburg, PA.

The Hillman Cancer Center is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Professional Staff Nurse to join our infusion team in Harrisburg, PA. The Professional Staff Nurse is a Registered Nurse and a member of the care delivery team. The role involves setting standards for the level and quality of care, with responsibility, authority, and accountability for nursing care provision. The nurse manages patient care activities for a group of patients and their families through independent judgment, communication, and collaboration with team members. The role encompasses leadership, partnership, collaboration, and supervision. Establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships with physicians, healthcare providers, patients, and families to achieve desired patient outcomes throughout the continuum of care is essential. The Professional Staff Nurse demonstrates a commitment to the community and the nursing profession.

HOURS: Must be willing to work within the operating hours of 7:00 AM - 7:30 PM across various shifts (8-hour, 10-hour, 12-hour). Clinic hours are Monday/Friday 7:00 am - 5:30 pm and Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday 7:00 am - 7:30 pm.

Responsibilities:

  1. Participate actively in department or unit-specific quality improvement efforts. Identify opportunities for quality improvement and communicate these to colleagues and management. Take personal responsibility in enhancing patient satisfaction and care quality. Use research and evidence-based practices to support clinical improvements, discuss research opportunities during multidisciplinary rounds, and influence patient care plans.
  2. Ensure accountability for professional development to enhance practice quality and patient care. Engage in unit-based shared governance, goal setting, and support change initiatives to improve care quality and practice environment. Be an active and full partner on the care team, responding willingly to team needs. Participate in initiatives to improve patient care and the professional environment. Adapt to change and demonstrate flexibility.
  3. Develop and maintain productive relationships internally and externally. Demonstrate accountability, enthusiasm, motivation, and commitment to patients and colleagues. Respect cultural differences and promote healthy relationships. Maintain a healthy work-life balance, model safe work hours, and communicate safety hazards to management.
  4. Apply adult learning principles in teaching patients, families, students, and new staff. Provide detailed and effective education to patients and families, guiding them through care episodes and transitions. Support the development of students and new staff, possibly serving as a preceptor. Foster an environment of open dialogue, inquiry, and continuous improvement.
  5. Utilize the nursing process within the Relationship Based Care framework to create a healing environment. Formulate daily goals and care plans involving patients as partners, considering their holistic needs. Demonstrate critical thinking in identifying clinical, social, safety, psychological, and spiritual issues. Communicate effectively with care providers, document comprehensively, and promote safety and quality. Incorporate professional and organizational goals to enhance patient safety, quality, and satisfaction. Build compassionate, patient-centered relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.
