Professional Staff Nurse - 7 South Oncology

Join our team at UPMC Hamot as a Casual Professional Staff Nurse in the 7 South unit. Located in Erie, PA, UPMC Hamot is a Magnet-designated facility seeking a nurse to provide compassionate, high-quality care in an acute medical-oncology setting. This role offers the opportunity to develop diverse skills while working in a supportive environment.

Position Overview: The Professional Staff Nurse is responsible for delivering high-quality patient care, collaborating with the healthcare team, and establishing strong relationships with patients and families to achieve optimal outcomes. The nurse will manage a patient group, demonstrating leadership, collaboration, and accountability.

Unit Overview: 7 South is a 46-bed acute medical-oncology unit caring for adults, including geriatric patients, with various medical conditions. The unit specializes in oncology care, administering chemotherapy and supporting treatments such as blood transfusions, IV hydration, and wound care. It includes 12 step-down beds for higher-acuity patients, offering nurses a chance to learn a wide range of skills.

Responsibilities:

  1. Apply the nursing process to create healing environments and develop individualized care plans.
  2. Use critical thinking to address clinical, social, and psychological needs, communicating effectively with the care team.
  3. Ensure thorough documentation to promote effective communication.
  4. Support patient safety, quality, and satisfaction by adhering to standards and organizational goals.
  5. Build strong relationships with patients, families, and colleagues to foster compassionate, patient-centered care.
  6. Participate in quality improvement initiatives and identify opportunities for care enhancement.
  7. Utilize evidence-based practices to improve clinical care and collaborate in multidisciplinary discussions.
  8. Maintain a positive work environment, balancing responsibilities and well-being.
  9. Teach and mentor patients, families, and new staff, supporting their learning.
  10. Engage in professional development, shared governance, and team collaboration to improve practice.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care, understanding growth and development principles across the lifespan.
  • Ability to assess patient status and interpret age-specific needs per department policies.
  • Minimum of 1 year of nursing experience; BSN preferred.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with the healthcare team, including physicians, support staff, and patients/families.
  • Effective in managing multiple priorities in a complex environment, with proficiency in specialized equipment.
  • Critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills essential for patient care.
  • Leadership ability to guide others in applying the nursing process and clinical judgment.
  • Physical stamina to walk, stand, lift, and position patients regularly.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Current RN licensure in practicing state; UPMC-approved national certification preferred.
  • CPR certification (AHA standards) required within 30 days of hire.
  • ACLS certification required within 1 year.
  • NIHSS certification required within 6 months.
  • Act 34 clearance required.
