Purpose and Scope
Assist in planning, implementing, and assessing the school’s guidance program designed to enhance students' academic, social, emotional, and environmental strengths. The position involves performing both professional and administrative tasks independently, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.
Essential Job Functions
- Implement a comprehensive guidance and counseling program based on state and district standards; collaborate with the supervisor, other counselors, principal, assistant principals, faculty, staff, and community resources in planning, coordinating, and assessing the counseling program.
- Counsel individuals and groups of students in setting and developing strategies for achieving academic, social/personal development, and other identified goals.
- Facilitate crisis intervention as needed to ensure school and student safety.
- Provide peer mediation services for students as needed.
- Discover and develop students' special abilities.
- Address and resolve students' educational handicaps.
- Administer various assessments to evaluate students' development and needs.
- Refer students to appropriate school, district, and community services when necessary.
- Maintain confidential student case files; prepare and submit required records and reports.
- Attend meetings with staff and service providers to discuss individual student education plans and progress.
- Conduct conferences with parents to discuss student progress and issues; assist in organizing parent workshops as required.
- Coordinate with the principal and assistant principal regarding student registration, course selection, and scheduling.
- Analyze data related to attendance, detention, failure rates, and other factors to determine guidance counseling needs.
- Assist in monitoring students during recess, in the cafeteria, and during drop-off or dismissal times as necessary.
- Respond to inquiries, concerns, and complaints within the scope of responsibilities.
- Perform routine administrative tasks, including preparing correspondence, copying, filing, answering phones, handling faxes, managing computer data, and ordering supplies.
- Attend training, conferences, and workshops to enhance professional knowledge and skills.
- Perform additional duties as assigned or directed.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master’s Degree in school counseling, plus at least one (1) year of related experience, totaling seven (7) years of education and experience combined. Must have state certification in Guidance and Counseling.
Degree Equivalency Formula:
Bachelor’s Degree = 4 years plus required experience.
Master’s Degree = 2 years plus required experience. When a Master’s degree is required, the years for a Bachelor’s Degree must be included.
