The Colorado Department of law is seeking a highly qualified and experienced attorney to serve as the Professional Responsibility Counsel. This role involves providing expert advice on conflicts of interest and ethics issues, leading training and ethics programming for the office, and ensuring adherence to the highest standards of professional conduct. WHAT YOU WILL DO

Specific responsibilities include:

EthicsAdvice and Counseling

  • Provide guidance and counsel to attorneys and staff on matters related to conflicts of interest, professional conduct, and ethical obligations.

  • Assistwith navigating ethical issues involving appointment of special assistant attorneys general

  • Review and analyze potential conflicts of interest and propose resolutionsin accordance withapplicable laws, regulations, and professional standards.

  • Develop, implement, and oversee policies and procedures to manage and mitigate conflicts of interest.

Training and Development:

  • Design and lead comprehensive training programs on ethics and professional responsibility for attorneys and staff.

  • Conduct regular workshops, seminars, and presentations to educate employees on ethical standards and best practices.

  • Stay abreast of developments in legal ethics and incorporate relevant updates into training materials.

Compliance and Monitoring:

  • Monitor and ensure compliance with ethical standards and professional responsibility guidelines.

  • Investigate and address allegations of ethical violations, working collaboratively with relevant stakeholders to resolve issues.

  • Prepare reports and documentation related to ethics compliance and professional responsibility matters.

Policy Development:

  • Collaborate with senior leadership to develop and update policies related to professional responsibility and ethics.

  • Advise on the ethical implications of new initiatives, policies, and procedures within the office.

  • Serve as a resource for legal ethics questions and provide interpretations of rules and guidelines.

Leadership and Collaboration:
  • Lead the Professional Responsibility and Ethics team, fostering a culture of integrity and ethical behavior.

  • Work closely with other departments and external entities to promote ethical practices and compliance.

  • Represent the Colorado Department of Law in professional organizations and at ethics-related conferences and events.



This recruitment may be used to fill more than one Assistant Attorney General position in the Department of Law.

In order to be appointed as a Senior Assistant Attorney General, candidates must have a minimum of ten years of experience in legal practice with a focus on ethics, professional responsibility, or related areas. The Senior Assistant Attorney General pay range is $112,564 to $150,556/year.

Salary note: Although a salary range is listed, salary will be set commensurate with the successful candidate's qualifications and in compliance with the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act.


Salary will be paid on a biweekly basis.WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Applicants must be admitted to the Colorado bar or be clearly eligible to waive into the Colorado Bar and be in good standing at the time of application. Candidates eligible to waive into the Colorado Bar will be required to submit proof of their completed application and application for Practice Pending Admission before the first day of employment. For this Senior Assistant Attorney Generalposition, we are seeking applicants who have a minimum of ten (10) years of relevant experience.

Applicants should highlight in their cover letter any relevant experience, including experience with advice and counseling on ethics related matters; training and development on ethics and professional responsibility for attorney and staff; policy development related to professional responsibility and ethics; and leadership and collaboration in fostering a culture of integrity and ethical behavior. Applicants are also encouraged to describe their experience mentoring lawyers and staff.

We are looking for a teammate who has excellent interpersonal and client relationship skills, who thrives in and enjoys fostering a collaborative and friendly work environment but who can also effectively work independently. The strongest candidates will also have:

  • More than the minimum 10 years of relevant experience
  • In-depth knowledge of legal ethics rules, regulations, and best practices
  • Proven experience in developing and delivering training programs
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership abilities
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and integrity
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting a culture of integrity and accountability within the office
  • Experiencing mentoring others or successfully leading teams in a legal setting
  • A demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others
  • Maturity and judgment when dealing with high-level stakeholders, including knowing when to consult teammates and supervisors
  • The ability to be a self-starter who is capable of and enjoys working independently
  • A demonstrated commitment to public service, ethics and professional responsibilities, specifically.
