Professional Engineer (PE) – Crane & Heavy Lift Systems
Employment Type: Full-Time, Permanent (Onsite)
Discipline: Civil / Structural / Mechanical Engineering
Position Overview
We are seeking a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) to lead critical engineering efforts behind complex heavy-lift and rigging operations. In this role, you will be the technical authority ensuring multi-ton industrial equipment and critical structures are hoisted, transported, and positioned with zero margin for error.
Whether your background is in structural, civil, or mechanical design, this role bridges core engineering mechanics with high-stakes field execution. Direct crane industry experience is not required—we will mentor and train the right engineer in rigging mechanics, specialized crane dynamics, manufacturer chart analytics, and industry lifting codes (ASME/ANSI/OSHA).
Core Responsibilities
- Engineered Lift Planning: Formulate, model, and validate critical lift packages for major industrial turnarounds, capital projects, and plant operations.
- Structural & Geotechnical Analysis: Calculate ground-bearing pressures, verify soil/pad capacities, and design temporary support structures, crane matting, and load-spreading foundations.
- Rigging & Capacity Verification: Analyze rigging hardware arrangements (slings, spreader bars, shackles) and cross-reference equipment setups against OEM crane capacity charts to verify stability and structural margins.
- Stamping & Deliverables: Produce high-clarity engineering calculation packages, rigging drawings, and lift methodologies; review, sign, and seal work prepared under your direct supervision in accordance with state board requirements.
- Cross-Functional Technical Counsel: Act as the technical advisor to project managers, estimators, and operations leaders during bid development, pre-lift hazard assessments, and job execution.
- Field Engineering & Jobsite Audits: Conduct site walkdowns in industrial settings, participate in critical pre-lift safety briefings, and troubleshoot emergent field constraints alongside rigging superintendents and crane operators.
Candidate Qualifications
Required
- Licensure: Active Professional Engineer (PE) license (State of Louisiana or eligibility for rapid comity licensure).
- Education: Bachelor of Science in Civil, Structural, Mechanical, or a closely related ABET-accredited engineering discipline.
- Technical Rigor: Deep grounding in statics, mechanics of materials, structural deflection, and stress analysis.
- Field Fluency: Excellent communication skills, strong spatial reasoning, and the professional confidence to interface effectively with both plant executives and field craft crews.
Preferred
- Familiarity with heavy industrial environments (petrochemical, refinery, energy, or civil infrastructure).
- Experience with 2D/3D CAD (AutoCAD, MicroStation) and structural modeling tools.
- Familiarity with relevant industrial standards, such as ASME B30 series, ASME P30.1 (Lift Planning), and OSHA 1926 subpart CC.
Working Conditions
- Balance of Office & Field: Primary workstation in Geismar, LA, performing engineering analysis and documentation, combined with frequent visits to active construction sites, chemical plants, and fabrication yards.
- Physical & Safety Demands: Ability to navigate active industrial facilities, wear mandatory PPE, and conduct on-foot site evaluations under varied weather conditions.
