Job summary

Remedy is seeking a mid-level California-licensed Professional Engineer to support engineering, remedial design, and implementation across Remedy’s portfolio of contaminated-property assessment, remediation, and redevelopment projects.

This hands-on role spans the full lifecycle from site assessment to site development integration, working closely with Remedy’s Head of Environmental and internal teams. The ideal candidate can independently review engineering work and take PE-level responsibility.

About Remedy

Remedy is a startup committed to addressing the planet’s enormous challenge of environmentally contaminated land. Our mission is to build massively scalable, automated soil remediation solutions to return contaminated land to productive use. We do this by developing and deploying novel hardware and software tools to streamline investigation, remediation, reporting, and management of contaminated sites. Unlike other firms, Remedy controls the entire process, from site identification to redevelopment entitlement and hand-off to a developer.

Position Summary

We are seeking a mid-level California-Licensed Professional Engineer to support engineering, remedial design, and implementation across Remedy’s growing portfolio of contaminated-property assessment, remediation, and redevelopment projects.

This is a hands-on role spanning the full lifecycle of a project: site assessment and remedial planning, engineering design, contractor procurement and management, field implementation, regulatory coordination, and integration of remediation with future site- development needs. The position will work closely with Remedy’s Head of Environmental and with internal development, laboratory, and engineering teams.

The candidate will initially be Remedy’s sole licensed Professional Engineer and will have final engineering review and stamp authority for work requiring a California P.E. Candidates should therefore have experience and professional judgment commensurate with independently reviewing and taking responsibility for engineering work.

The ideal candidate has a strong environmental or civil engineering background, understands how remediation projects are conducted in the field, and is comfortable managing several projects at different stages of investigation, design, remediation, and redevelopment simultaneously.

Key Responsibilities

• Remedial Engineering & Design

  • Develop and evaluate remedial alternatives for contaminated soil, groundwater, and soil vapor.

  • Prepare and review engineering calculations, design criteria, drawings, specifications, remedial action plans, implementation plans, construction documents, and contractor scopes of work.

  • Evaluate remedial alternatives based on technical performance, constructability, cost, schedule, regulatory acceptance, and compatibility with future redevelopment.

  • Evaluate excavation, earthwork, shoring, grading, foundations, utilities, soil reuse, vapor mitigation, and other engineering issues in conjunction with future site development.

  • Identify opportunities to integrate environmental remediation with demolition, grading, foundation, and site-development work to reduce overall project cost and schedule.

• Construction & Contractor Management

  • Develop scopes, quantities, bid packages, budgets, and schedules for remedial construction.

  • Solicit and evaluate contractor proposals and support contractor selection and contract negotiation.

  • Manage drilling firms, excavation and shoring contractors, earthwork contractors, remediation contractors, trucking and disposal vendors, and other specialty subcontractors.

• Project & Program Management

  • Develop project scopes, budgets, schedules, procurement strategies, and implementation plans.

  • Track technical, regulatory, construction, schedule, and cost risks and communicate them clearly to Remedy leadership.

  • Coordinate with regulators, municipalities, developers, property owners, contractors, consultants, and other project stakeholders.

  • Help develop Remedy’s internal engineering standards, specifications, cost-estimating tools, design practices, and project-management systems as the company grows.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.

• Active California Professional Engineer license in good standing.

• 5+ years of progressively responsible engineering experience, with substantial experience in environmental remediation, environmental construction, civil engineering, geotechnical construction, or related work.

• Demonstrated experience independently reviewing engineering work and exercising professional judgment appropriate for P.E.-level responsibility.

• Experience taking projects from investigation and conceptual design through detailed design and field implementation.

• Experience managing contractors and subcontractors during construction or remediation.

• Experience preparing and reviewing scopes of work, engineering calculations, cost estimates, specifications, contractor proposals, and construction documents.

• Strong project-management skills and demonstrated ability to manage multiple active projects simultaneously.

• Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills.

• OSHA HAZWOPER 40-hour training, or ability to obtain promptly after hire.

• Ability to travel to active project sites, primarily within California and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Additional Consideration Given For:

• Experience with contaminated commercial, industrial, petroleum, or brownfield properties.

• Experience working on projects overseen by California Regional Water Quality Control Boards, DTSC, local oversight agencies, or U.S. EPA.

• Experience integrating environmental remediation with redevelopment, demolition, grading, foundations, utilities, or other site-development work.

• Experience working in an entrepreneurial, owner/developer, design-build, or early-stage company environment.

Team

• This position reports to the Head of Environmental and will work closely with Remedy’s environmental, engineering, investment, and development teams.

• Focus on in-office work in West Oakland with regular project-site travel.
